Q&A Time!
I'll be doing a Q&A about the Escape project. So what what are your questions?
Comments (89)
How fast can you charge the configuration on the Escape and how fast can you charge the final configuration on the bus?
I believe you said you'd be putting the Tesla motors in series on a drivetrain on the bus, once it comes time to swap that over. Do you have any concerns about the fabrication and strengths required for that in the bus drivetrain vs the AWD approach going into the E-scape? Also, do you have any plans yet for tours/events with the E-scape once it's finished?
Did the fact that there was already a hybrid on the Escape platform factor in to choosing that vehicle, or just happy accident/didn't think about that at all? If it did, was there any considerations for using some of the hybrid parts on the build, too?
Is there anything with the E-scape project that you are worried won't scale up to the bus?
Are you planning on using a digital Dash?
will you do a top speed run and a 0-60 run? also if you are planning on to keep it around it would be really cool to see if you could do a 4 wheel steering on it :P Also what's the approximate range target for it at highway speeds?
Once it's fully working, would you consider some really dumb videos with it? For example, taking it to a ford dealershipnor a doing traffic light races lol
Oh I'd love to see it go to a Ford dealership, just say it needs an oil change
How safe do you expect the machine to be? Do you have any plans for the escape once you unelectric it?
What's involved with making it street legal? And what does your insurance agent think? Could be an episode all by itself.
Have you thought about using your skills and knowledge gained during this project to go to town on the Trabant next? And if so, why not?
Any future EV conversion plans besides the bus? Are you going to revive the wheego using this method?
How much will the weight of the vehicle differ once the replacement is complete?
Any thoughts on a SuperFastMatt collaboration? He also has a very dry sense of humor and has mostly completed his own EV conversion lately. I think you two could do great things together!
How long will the E-scape be E-scape and what will happen to it when it’s served it’s purpose and goes back to unpowered escape?
Do you have enough cupholders for the people you will inevitably take for rides in this thing?
1) What will you use as a speedometer and how will it be connected? 2) Will you let your patrons name the finished electric Escape test car?
Do you plan to do any weight reduction to make up for the weight of the batteries?
Would you consider doing an EV conversion as a daily driver, now that you're knee deep in a rather un-daily-able EV conversion?
Will the escape be able to accelerate faster than it can stop?
Given the amount you had done, do you feel you will get it running by the date of the event you wanted to attend? What are the major hurdles you are experiencing?
How fast do you think it will go when it's done? Will you take it to a track and do a top speed test!?
Would a Tesla drive unit fit under the hood (rather bonnet, sorry, I'm British) of a Trabant - if so, could/would you make a several-hundred-horsepower-electric Trabant?
Can you add DC fast charging to the Escape Project. If you can, How many kilowatts can it be.
Where did you manage to fit the HyperEncabulator? https://youtu.be/5nKk_-Lvhzo
1) What is the strangest car in the world? b) Can you add a Norwegian made car to your collection?
Let's say you end up absolutely loving the Escape when it is finished. (Which I suspect you will.) 😋 Are you going to keep the drive units in the Escape permanently and get new ones for the bus?
Your house and workshops are on fire, You have time to rescue one of your slow badly made death traps, which one do you pick? You have to pick the Robin becuase there's a good chance my Grandad made it
When will you visit Australia and help feed our wildlife? Also, what are your thoughts on the recent salt battery developments?
Do you worry what the public response to this car will be? What do you want the response to be?
Probably more for when you're done but: Would you recommend doing this (to a better condition car maybe) yourself if you want go electric but aren't happy with the off the shelf offerings from Polsta, Tesla, etc.
Are you concerned about the stresses on the unibody? Also, how are you doing? Hope all is well.
Q1 Arre there any installation / conversion standards you have to meet in your state to make it road legal? and if not, what standards are you setting for yourself? I'm thinking: electrical safety, contactors, insulation monitoring, interlocks etc Q2 This is a practice run for the bus right, just with a smaller battery pack I guess? The motors will have enough raw power to push the bus along with the right gearing. We know they can hurl a Tesla up to illegal speeds a few seconds, but can they put out sustained high power to push a bus along a highway at legal speeds for an hour at a time without overheating?
When can we expect pre-orders to drop?
How many times have you shocked yourself/ electrocuted yourself
Do you like gladiator movies???
What's your favourite kind of sandwich? Mine's bologna and mozzarella with a bit of mustard and mayo.
Try it with baby Swiss and horseradish. Hmm that’s good
If you were to do this project all over again and had a choice of any car, what car would you convert and why?
It being a Ford, will you keep the all important feature of the doo-dee-doo sound when the key is in the "ignition"?
When does it stop being the same vehicle and need a new VIN? Are you going to make it street-legal?
We noticed you picked a car with an independent rear suspension to electric swap. Are there electric swap options options available for vehicles with solid rear axles?
Swap out the engine with an electric motor using an adapter plate
Are we allowed to escape aswell now?
Can you Drag race the Lada vs. Trabant. It'd make for hysterical content in my eyes 👀
Drag race between the Polestar and the E-Scape?
Will you be calling it the E-scape?
Whats the biggest thing that isn't needed for the Escape project but you will do anyways because you really want to?
Are you going to integrate any of the original Ford controls or gauges into the EV system?
Do you miss the smart ? 🤭
How is the wheego doing? Battery swap after the Escape, but before the bus?
Favorite cheese?
Were there any other cars you would’ve EV converted if you didn’t have the escape?
Does the Escape have a cool nickname yet? Maybe something like Escape Velocity or the Tesla Tribute
Is the plan still to gut the Escape after it's finished and use the parts to electrify the bus?
What tools are a must for this type of project? (I’m considering a similar project for my Z3)
Does this count as a question?
What are your plans for the dash/inside the car? Also, do you have a favorite out of your animals?
What's your favorite color? :)
What tires will you be using? And will there be a drag race between you and Jarred's HellCamino?
Will you need new axles. Since I am sure those stock ones aren’t rated for that much horsepower/torque
Will you be taking it to that same drag strip where you raced the Trabant when finished?
Is there an aspect of the project that seemed complex at first but turned out to be quite simple to do?
Would you rather drag race 1 Escape-sized duck or 100 duck-sized Escapes?
If you covered these topics in the past, sorry. What plans do you have for the instrument cluster? What about comfort amenities such as AC and heat? Will you make this road legal? If so, what are your plans for the defrost system? Are you going to do a make-shift version like the Electrek Uncar you covered a year ago?
Any interest on doing an awkward meet and greet after you finish the SUV?
I want there to be an Aging wheels Meetup too! Maybe at like Six Flags St Louis or something
Do you think doing the Escape project has given you a better understanding on how you want to approach the bus project, any areas you didn't consider before hand that will be important to the electrification of the bus?
Are you planning on selling etched bits of parts you remove?
What's the plan for making sure that the rear wheels don't overpower the front wheels, especially in turns? Will you need to incorporate some kind of steering angle sensor along with some kind of controller to make the two halves get along? Also, will there be a cage? Tell me there will be a cage. Or at least a roll bar.
How much did you pay for the battery pack?
What are some things that you learned through this process that surprised you. Like things you thought you knew, only to find out that you were wrong, or didn’t have a full understanding?
Will the EV brains you are adding be able to talk to any of the old Escape functions (wipers, radio, seat belt dinger, etc)?
Are you worried about the escape being a bit tippy when it has that much torque behind it? This is coming from someone who used to own an escape with that body style, and even with the 4cyl engine it felt a bit tippy in comparison to other small suvs
What do you think the range of the E-Escape will be? Will it be more efficient than your Polestar, do you think? It probably weighs about the same with everything electrified. Are you going to transfer the batteries to the bus along with the motors? What does the software look like for the new controller boards you put in the Tesla motors?
Do you have an estimate on range?
Are you worried about breaking or bending the stock suspension components during hard acceleration? 400+ lbft per axle is immense.
For the non-americans, can you please contextualize us about the road-leaglity of a vehicle like that over there? How does it works? Thanks :-D
What BMS are you using?
Any regrets on the choice of the escape, or was it a good decision for a mule? Question two: Will you be keeping it for future batter* testing/building adventures? (Beyond the bus) Question C: Could you put a motor on a PTO tow behind mower and use the escape to mow the lawn? ;P *battery… Or pancakes, sure
Have you considered cutting out ALL excess weight (Or at least low hanging weight... fruit?) and seeing how absurd your power to weight ratio would be?
Money wise, did you end up scrapping all the parts you ripped out and if so how much money did it end up saving towards the cost?
Are you going to try towing / do a tractor pull / go to the drag strip?
Given the amount of torque those two motors can put out what's actually going to stop the escape from twisting in the middle? Also are you planning on taking this down a drag strip at any point?
If money/time was no object, what's something ridiculous you'd love to add to the project?
How much of the actual fab will be useable on the bus? Or is this strictly a learning platform?
How do you plan to Escape?
Is there a point when you feel that you might escape the project instead of just pushing forward on it forever? Maybe finding something else that can be a Tribute to the Escape project?
Are you keeping it in one piece now when your done with it?
