Video: Yamaha DX7: The Official Sound of the 1980s
In the past three weeks, I've become completely obsessed with the Yamaha DX7. This video is the fruit of that obsession.

ON a Friday in the UK they show old episodes of Top of the Pops (UK bastion of mainstream music for over 30 years)- and I've become obsessed with DX7 spotting, mid to late 80's I've seen as many as 3 on an episode :)
Spent a lot of time with that machine in the 80s. Still do not miss programming it though.
I love this synth. There’s something so magical about the sound. Yes it’s brassy and sharp but there’s just something that this can do that other synths can’t. I have the KORG Volca FM and I won’t ever sell it.
I love some of the old Yamaha equipment. I finally got a VL-70 wind synth module I’ve wanted forever. So many cool sounds.
I love Dexed although I never bothered to do my own sounds. The Lost FM Cartridge is great, so thank you for that. I used to have a DX7 and a few cartridges gifted to me by my dad. It disappeared when I was sharing a space with a bunch of other people. It's a little sad to loose a gift from my dad who passed away a few years ago, but ... spilt milk and a small appartment already stuffed with many other hobby materials :)
Oh, whoa. I've been playing around with Dexed for a while now. Don't think I made the connection that it was essentially a DX7 plugin. Very cool!
I will have to look at Dexed again now that I am running the Grey Matter mod...on the stock original DX7 it does not do live patches. I am using the Hypersynth Hcard-701, that can hold about 12000 presets...and I have stored everything I could find (including the Brian Eno stuff you showed.) BTW @madFame on YT did DX7 patch videos...showing how to create different patches using the small lcd and membrane buttons...
I picked on up a few years ago for $100, all it needed was the battery replaced...it is just a lovely playing and sounding instrument...but almost impossible to program.
It almost feels like they included the possibility of programming it just so that they could claim that it was in fact a synthesizer :)
