Pang!
This game, with no large demons, no hero plot and not even screen scroll, is one of the most enjoyable arcade titles ever. Show it to any kid and they’ll love it too. Pang! is also an interesting title because the hardware was developed by CAPCOM, and they also published games for this 8-bit platform. As I have done many CAPCOM systems, I was interested in this one from the technical point of view too.
The system clearly targets low cost: only two graphics layers (fixed background and sprites), only one CPU and a budget -yet powerful- FM synthesizer. Yet, the system provided us with a few nice titles that we will bring to MiSTer during this month. This game is one favourites of Patreon director Skutis, who has also extracted the schematics from a PCB I sent him. Given his tidy schematics, some measurements, the information on MAME and what I already knew about CAPCOM hardware, this was a relatively easy FPGA conversion. However, the sound chip is not perfect at the moment. You won’t notice it, most likely, but some instruments sound slightly different. This is because of some small differences between the YM2413, the low budget version used here, and the YM3812 chip, for which I had made a FPGA version a while ago and I’m kind of using here. It should be fixed for next week.
Esperanza pretty much completed the SEGA System 18 schematics. Now I have to spend some time analysing them and she will likely spend some time this month making PCB measurements. We will have more arcade releases next week, and maybe the week after. I’m reserving the third week to resume work on the NeoGeo Pocket.
Some JT cores for the MiSTer have been updated with support for adaptive scan lines, thanks to wickerwaka’s help. Pang! supports them too.
See you next week!

Dip switches will come later? One of my favorites on the Amiga, never played the real deal until now. Thanks.
Now that you’ve tried it, how would you compare it to the Amiga version? It always seemed to me that the ports never quite got the music right. (I haven’t played the Amiga version)
Just testing this out for the first time and it is amazing! Great work JT! I do notice the slight difference in the sounds (compared to my GroovyArcade setup). Is the sound chip the only reason this is still beta? Everything else seems spot on so far. Thank you so much.
Yes, I'm still working in the sound chip
i replaced the arcade folder i had saved for safety and now the previous beta games removed. Pang I entered it manually and now it works. Now I am making a general backup of the sd. I hope that the next update does not create other problems, as has already happened. Thank you for your support and for what you are doing for us.
hi, I made several updates and now I find Pang in the alternatives but now no Beta games work anymore. I am a supporter unless something has changed
It looks like something went very bad in those updates. Pang! should be in the main menu. You should still have your jtbeta.zip in games/mame. The other games in beta phase should be available too.
Me encanta este arcade José. Gracias!
Another amazing game, thanx Jotego for bringing another classic to the community! :)
Muchas gracias por otro nuevo gran juego!! 👏👏👏👏👍👍
Pang was one of those mesmerising games on the arcades that you couldn't resist. The anime look and the incredible tunes were the icing on te cake for 7yo me. It is awesome to get it recreated in MiSTer!
Oh yes the tunes were huge for me. I was so disappointed when the SNES one wasn’t quite right. Just all SNES-sy and wavtetable sounding. It does make me wonder how a Genesis one might have sounded.
Thanks! I had never played this before today, I fired it up over lunch and had a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to playing it with my kids this weekend.
(Off topic)I’ve just picked up a Rally Bike board. Would love to see this on MiSTer. One of my all time favourites too.
I love your taste in games Jotego. This game is a proper arcade classic and deserves your attention. Thanks so much for doing this as a core. Was the game distributed by Mitchell? Or co developed by them? Super Pang is also amazing but I never got into any other versions after that. Was Snow Bros also Mitchell?
Yeah I never got into them much past Super Pang either. For me it was kind of like with any Puzzle Bobble after 2 or 2EX; the newer ones added things that didn’t need to be there, made graphics unnecessarily flashy, and really just seemed mostly redundant and never quite as good. Then again, I’m pretty old and the last time I played either of these in a cabinet that wasn’t my own was… 20 years ago. At least. Maybe if I’d started at a later one I’d think the earlier ones were downright primitive. :)
Super stoked! Buster Brothers was the first arcade game I ever owned. I agree that it’s super simplistic gameplay is easy to pickup up and becomes an instant favorite.
Thank you Jose for bringing another classic to MiSTer. This is one of my favourties from the first time I played it on the Atari ST back in 1990.
wonderful, thanks for all your hard work Jose and team. long live JT FRIDAY!
Thank you! Pang is a classic that doesn’t get enough attention.
I can't wait to play thank you, loved the Amiga version too
Nice! Pang is one of my favorites! I used to spend every quarter I could beg from mom at the Buster Bros. machine at the nearby 7-11 when I was a kid. Still sucked at it but it sure is fun!
Definitely in my top ten of arcade favourites, thank you!
cheers
Thank you very much!
One of my favourites from my childhood, along with Rastan. I just need Rainbow Islands now 😅. Gracias José!
Lovely stuff 😍
