Yie Ar Christmas!

(Español abajo)

Yie Ar Kungfu is an old Konami title, very popular among 8-bit users -both console and microcomputers. It's the earlies SF2-like game you can find. The title means: one, two, Kungfu! And it's full of funny moments, like when you hit a male opponent's nether parts and salute them with a nihao.

Konami recently relaunched the game for modern consoles as an emulator and made a music video for it.

The hardware is very similar to Kicker's, yet a bit simpler: less colour and no scroll. On the other hand, there are PCM voices now. Believe it or not, two bugs still present in Kicker were not obvious until I tried to reuse the same hardware for Yie Ar Kungfu! The MAME version of Yie Ar Kungfu didn't have the bugs but as the game drivers were different, the bugs were present in Kicker, and again, they didn't notice. I have reported them already.

The most interesting bug is that the sprite hardware works drawing the next line during the full length of a line. That means that the line count will change while the circuit is still drawing, because the count changes in the middle of blanking (H blank), not at the end. So the circuit draws some sprites offset by one line. The game compensates for that and writes y-axis values already offset in the opposite direction for the sprites that would be affected. Because Kicker is a horizontal game, the characters would just seem to be one pixel further or closer, which will fool the hit box. But, it isn't visually obvious that there's a bug. In Yie Ar Kungfu, as the game is horizontal, there were some places where it was obvious that the sprites were off.

Like with Kicker, if you have trouble with video synchronization, set the 60Hz option on in the OSD menu.

As usual, files are attached, available in update_all and in Discord too.

Merry Christmas

Feliz Navidad

One of my favorites - AND I have the board for this game too! Was wondering how the custom chips would be tackled. I guess they are all known now.

I am finding a lot of small details that weren't known before in this and the other Konami titles. Check the post about Kicker for more details.

Would be possible to create an exact 60hz option for Shinobi/SYS16 ? I get small flickerings from time to time using it on a OLED while using Black Frame Insertion (odd thing is other cores like CPS1/2 which also don't run at 60hz work fine)
