A Konami CPU under the microscope / Wardner

JTKCPU: back to the real board

Konami's custom CPU sits at the heart of quite a few arcade favorites. This week I put the FPGA's JTKCPU through a major update based on measurements from a real Vendetta PCB. We ran instruction probes on the original 053248 chip, recording results, condition flags and timing, then used that evidence to revise the FPGA CPU. This was done using Wickerwaka's PicoROM.

The research exposed previously unknown instruction encodings and several cases where the old model set flags incorrectly. A game can make a decision on one of those flags, so a small CPU detail can become a very visible difference on screen. This is all new information for the whole scene, FPGA and software emulation alike.

This affects games already supported by JTCORES: Aliens, Crime Fighters, Gang Busters / Crazy Cop, Super Contra, Thunder Cross, Ajax / Typhoon, Haunted Castle, The Simpsons, Parodius DA!, Surprise Attack and Vendetta. They share JTKCPU in our cores, although the physical measurements were made on Vendetta's 053248 and there is an older Konami CPU variant that still needs its own checks.

I expect some of these games to behave differently, although we need play testing to learn exactly where the changes appear. Please revisit your favorites and tell us what you notice. The measurement notes have the technical detail for the curious. I have already updated my fork of the ASL assembler tool to fully support this CPU. I will also update the MAME version of the CPU with this information.

Wardner joins the lineup

Wardner, Toaplan's 1987 fantasy action game, arrives in a new core this week. It takes you through forests and castle passages with a fireball attack and a jump, while enemies, moving platforms and hidden dangers keep the journey lively. The Japanese title is Wardner no Mori; Pyros is another regional version.

This core reproduces the board's Z80 CPUs and its TMS320C10 signal processor. Many thanks to Marc Emmerson, who brought the new core to JTCORES. Thanks to IkaMusume for his DSP core. Note that Wardner does not fit on the smaller SiDi device.

This driver is based on official data sheets for the DSP and the CRT controller. Device connectivity is derived from the MAME driver.

New beta key

The beta key changed with this release. Please copy the new key from the updated jtbeta repository to your device along with the new cores. For MiSTer, replace games/mame/jtbeta.zip; for Analogue Pocket, replace Assets/jtpatreon/common/beta.bin. An older key can leave a beta core at its credits screen.

Other Updates

  • Pac-Land: the lantern effect in later rounds is fixed, and the CUS30 noise channels are back for effects such as the water spouts (niknak).

  • Tough Turf: the background no longer disappears in stage 8 (niknak).

  • Sky Kid Deluxe: corrected layer placement (niknak).

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: corrected the position of enlarged and shrunken sprites (niknak).

  • Thunder Cross: corrected the boss flame hit detection (issue #1453).

  • CPS1, CPS1.5 and CPS2: video RAM changes prevent slowdowns on supported FPGA targets when a game fills it rapidly.

  • BlockOut and Volfied have graduated from beta and are now public releases.
