Tortle - Proportions Sketch - "That's enough polygons"
Hey folks!
I have started working on the basic proportions for the Tortles.
With perhaps the exception of Wizkids, I think most of the Tortle models and artworks I've seen online look too human with regards to proportions. Their heads should be smaller and their shells just aren't important enough.
I'm going in another direction and have decided to really emphasize the massive and slow aspect of turtles for those models. Heavy and tanky ;)
For the Zbrush users reading this : Think simple. In most cases, you don't need fancy basemeshes or tons of polygons to sketch something out. A simple 10K polygons sphere can take you a long way ;) I didn't even Dynamesh this yet ^^'

Really like this spiny turtle, https://66.media.tumblr.com/83a27e04fe1f7c77de893e436ff9929a/tumblr_p4prpwRMcd1uvq9elo4_1280.jpg. Perhaps as a sorcerer?
Great pic of a long-neck turtle with its mouth wide open... https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VEAvxpq4J5E/maxresdefault.jpg. Perhaps a bard tortle or raging barbarian?
I have two requests! 1) putting this one first because this one is super important to me: please don't put clothes or anything else going under the shell! Turtles aren't snails or hermit crabs, they aren't an animal that wears a shell--the shell is part of their body! 2) this one is just something I think would be cool--base your Tortles on different real species of turtles, tortoises, or terrapins. Snapping turtle barbarians, red-eared slider druids, sea turtle wizard, mata mata warlock, whatever. :D
Yeah, their shells are basically some kind of exoskeleton. No way anything's getting between the flesh and the shell ;) There will be drapery that makes sense when I think it's necesary, though. Give me as many species of turtles as you can, and I'll pick what I think is cool ;)
Nice, I like this. In Dungeons and Dragons, Tortles have Shell defense where they can withdraw into their shells. Most miniatures I've seen except the nolzur ones would be impossible. I'm really glad you are going this route!
Perfect then! Didn't even know that :) I just think it makes more sense and that it'd look a lot better with small heads and huge shells ;)
Sweet, looks like you're going the more 'tortollan' route with these, and I heartily approve! (Tortollan are World of Warcraft's version of tortoise/terrapin-people btw)
Didn't have that reference, thanks :D Most Tortollans I've come across so far do seem to have pretty big heads, though ^^
spikeshell its good idea
I think the Pirate is definitely getting spikes on his shell ;)
Love it! I used one of the spikeshell turtles from Reaper when I played my Tortle Wizard. Already wish I had had one of these instead!
Thanks :D I have also started sketching out the future Tortle models on simple pen and paper these past couple of evenings. I should scan and show them here as well ^^ The Wizard and Druid should look pretty cool in 3D, I think :)
