This was very funny. The visual and podcast media perfection
I feel like will is running this wrong. I believe the gauntlet is you are actively controlling multiple characters at once, so when you get into situations you have numbers on your side that begin to quickly dwindle as you go through the dungeon. Most of the characters are going to have hardly any health so they're guaranteed to die their first hit. That's also probably why the description in the beginning mentions dozens of villagers.
I don’t know Shadowdark specifically but this is how Dungeon Crawl Classic works- each player runs 4-6 randomly generated level 0 losers simultaneously. Part of the strategy is deciding who to sacrifice. But that would probably be overwhelming in an audio format!
