Five years in A House in the Rift

Hey, folks. Five whole years, huh?

I started making this game in 2019, without any plan, really, except that I wanted to make a game. An adult game with some sandbox elements. I wanted to make an adult game since I was a Uni student and discovered Flash games of a more spicy variety.

When I quit my last job I thought it was as good a time as any to finally try and do it. https://www.patreon.com/posts/demo-release-26509164 - this is the first post I made on my Patreon page, linking to the demo build.

The demo I made had potential, but the first few updates were pretty rough. I didn't know what I was doing, and I was a bit too careless with my savings. But right before I started seriously considering switching to hobby development and going back to working on dreary mobile games, the first big wave of support came through, and I paid my rent with Patreon money.

Now, five years down the line, I use "I" and "we" almost interchangeably. The team working on AHitR is up to 11 people now, with most working full-time. We couldn't have done it without you. Please accept a heartfelt thank you from me personally, and from our whole team. You are making it all possible, and there's no overestimating how much your support means to us.

Our focus continues to be on A House in the Rift for the foreseeable future. We're getting closer to the finishing line, but it's still a fair way away. We're exploring new tools and engines for our upcoming projects. And we've just assembled a separate team working on 2D games to make even more, different games.

I don't know where the future takes us but I will forever be grateful to you, folks. You didn't have to, but with your support A House in the Rift grew from a tiny demo to a game it is now, and the studio grew from a single person to its current size. I can't thank you enough for that, but we'll do our best to give back as much as we can.

For now, please enjoy the recreation of the House in the Unreal Engine and maybe check out the new Artbook if you want to support us further. We'll have more bonus thingies coming out throughout the month, and the 0.7.8 Alpha is releasing in a day or two.

Thank you, folks! Looking forward to many more years of making games for you!

Although I only recently came across this game during a cross promotion with another game creator on Patreon I thought it worth checking out. At least as a light hearted gaming experience compared to some more serious subject games I was playing. A couple weeks later, having been glued to monitor I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this experience, looking forward to future updates and am glad to be able to support the project in my limited capacity. Congratulations on your success and I wish you the best going forward!

I stumbled on this game on itch.io and fell in love with it almost immediately. The story was very interesting and each new reveal has just brought more questions in fun ways. You’ve done an excellent job making these characters 3 dimensional and feel genuinely charming. Looking forward to everything that comes next!

I've never been 100% sure when I started tracking A House in the Rift, so I double checked: August 2019. I really wish I had decided to put my money down and begun supporting there and then instead of only early last year, because every single update since I found this has been one I've enjoyed, and I found I genuinely looked forward to the next; from the start the character writing has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Congrats Zan on the long run my friend. And thank you for your help with my own project (Serenity), I am now working on my second project as well. I learned a lot from talking with you and I still use a few things you showed me in renpy. Best of luck to you and your team with the new projects and thanks again for taking the time to help me when I first started out :)

I remember when i download this game the first time 4 years and half ago, maybe the second or third update, so im here (as gamer in the game) almost since the beginning. I can enumerate 3 things on my opinion that made this game solid for gamers: 1-A good plot, 2-good characters with distinct personality each, 3-the update regularity, that means a gamer dont have to wait one year to next update, or worst. Congratz to all team for the 5 years. Ah, and hope to see more content for BLAIR.

I only found you last year, and I absolutely ate up the story, you wrote such an incredible story, and I can’t wait to see how it ends. And I really like how you learn about it through the main missions but also the side missions, they feel like they contribute instead of just being filler like some other games. And I’m being 100% honest when I say your story is more compelling than some multi million dollar tv shows or movies.
