⊹˚₊·‧Chapter 15: Mission
She opened her eyes.
She was in a city at night.
The city looked ruined and overgrown.
How… how did she come here?
And… who… … who even was she?
She looked down on herself.
She looked small. And thin. And if she was wearing a costume. Her hands… there was something wrong with her hands. She… she only had 8 fingers.
And she looked smooth. Eerily smooth. As if she were in a 3D world.
There was a glowing string tied to her little finger. What was that?
Important.
It was important.
She remembered that.
She also remembered something else.
Get a light source.
Get a weapon.
Get … her.
She knew almost nothing; But she knew that these three things were more important than anything else now.
She was walking towards a building. It looked somewhat familiar. She knew that light sources were inside. Weapons, too. And possibly her, if she could trust her gut feelings.
Not only 10 minutes later did she find herself in a rundown store, grabbing a flashlight.
In front of the shelves was a chair, pushed weirdly close to them.
She looked closer. Tiny footprints in the dust.
The one she was searching for had been here.
Another gut feeling.
She grabbed a second flashlight. Then she followed the footprints.
On her way she saw a mannequin. But not a normal one — a faceless wooden one with many joints, like one of those artists use, but life-sized. It was taller than her.
For some reason, this sight caused revulsion and anger within her; Maybe even hate.
Then the mannequin moved.
It looked grotesque. Disgusting, even. It looked as if it was sick and had forgotten how to move; Or that it wasn’t actually meant to move. It twitched and jerked unnaturally, coming straight for her.
Instinctively, she shone the light on it.
It stopped.
Good.
A weapon.
Right. She needed that.
While still shining on the disgusting mannequin, she looked around and saw a red “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” cabinet on the wall. With an axe inside.
This would work.
Without averting the light from the enemy, she walked sideways to the case, breaking it with her elbow and taking out the content.
Since she was so tiny, the axe felt huge; And satisfyingly heavy.
This would do good damage.
She walked towards the wooden enemy and didn’t hesitate. While shining on it, she started to hit it.
It cracked nicely as it broke down; leaving a strange satisfaction within her chest.
But that was not why she was here.
She was here because of her.
She followed the footprints. Up to the elevators. She opened the one in front of the markings in the dust and stepped inside. There was light. She could see that the dust was rubbed off on one of the buttons and pressed it.
While she was driving upwards, music was playing.
Then it opened its doors.
She put both of the flashlights into one hand and shone outside.
At first she saw nothing. But then, far in the distance in a corridor, she saw masses of them.
Twitching into each other, like a disgusting oversized wooden antpile.
That was where she was. She knew it.
But there were far too many. One ax wasn’t enough.
Fire?
No. That was dangerous. It could set other things on fire.
She looked at the alarm button in the elevator.
Then she hit it with all of her strength, breaking and locking it in place.
Immediately, the elevator gave a loud sound.
She quickly ran outside, towards the mannequins, but veered into another corridor.
She turned around to see the enemies passing by, quickly twitching towards the noise.
Perfect.
After the last one had passed, she waited 10 more seconds, then looked around the corner.
They were now all in front of the elevator, and the previously occupied door was free.
She rushed towards the door that was broken open and looked around inside.
Two enemies remained inside. She put one flashlight in her mouth, the other into her left hand, then started to take care of them, cutting them into handy little pieces.
After she was done, she looked around some more and eventually saw a flashlight lying on the ground, in front of a door.
Bingo.
She opened the door. It was unlocked. Behind it: A children’s room. Though, no sign of her.
She closed the door behind her and walked towards the window. It was closed. She looked under the bed. Nothing. Closet? Empty.
Another door. It most likely led to the toilet. She tried to open it. It was locked.
This was it.
She was behind it. She could feel it. It was vibrating through her being.
She wanted to yell out for her, but her voice didn’t work. No sound came out.
What…?
Unimportant.
The alarm from outside suddenly got quieter and quieter, ending up in a loud crash that shook the ground.
The elevator had broken down. The sound was gone.
She swiftly ran over to a heavy sideboard and shoved it in front of the door.
This would hold them up, for sure.
Then she went back to the other door, knocking on it.
Nothing happened.
She knocked louder and stronger.
Nothing happened.
She took the handle and tried to open it by force.
