The Expanse Season 1 Episode 10 Full Review and Reaction!
And here is my full reaction to season 1 episode 10 of The Expanse! What an amazing first season! I feel like they've left us in an interesting place, heading into season 2. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Miller and Holden will get up to, now that they're going to be together in a new setting (and under what I imagine will be vastly different circumstances). Also, now it's time for me to guess how many episodes into season 2 it'll be before Naomi and Holden are together. I'm guessing it won't take that much longer! haha
All the best,
Molly

haha yes I've advocated The Expanse to her. Glad she's picked it up. Although she had very little to say about it, only one ep though. Hope she sticks with it!!
I love this hour-long reactions and your insights. Perfect excuse to re-watch the show. I'm so excited for you to start S2!
Exactly! Love rewatching with a new fan!!
Hey, with comments earlier in the thread about the comparisons the Expanse has to other shows, I was just curious how everyone ranks their favourite Space Sci-fi shows. I'm interested to find out people’s thoughts on this genre, or maybe discover something that I had missed. My top 5 list, 1. Babylon 5 (Satisfying story/character arcs, but might be usurped by the Expanse if stellar seasons continue), 2. The Expanse (no spoilers), 3. Farscape (original and ridiculous fun), 4. Battlestar Galactica 2009 (still a little salty on final season and finale, would be higher on list), 5. Star Trek TOS/TNG (depending on the day I’m thinking about the list and how many lights I see). I'm rating these as to how I felt about them when I watched them, current shows aren’t limited as much by networks demand on episode counts (filler to make 20+ seasons), CGI, and quality actors/content restrictions, so I kinda thought it would be unfair to compare them to today’s standards.
Hmm, maybe I should watch Babylon 5.... I never got around to trying it. Ranking is hard, 1) The Expanse 2) BSG 3) TNG (Though I was one of those who loved the longer arcs in the second half of DS9 and the middle of Enterprise) 4) The Orville Never Watching: STD I'm trying to think of what else there is for good space scifi... SyFy channel absolutely sucks with original content (outside of The expanse), and most major networks won't touch the genre... Even movies have a hard time doing it well. I was excited for both Jupiter Ascending and Valerian... and while both had amazing visuals, neither were great story wise (though going into J.A. knowing reviews said it sucked, my expectations were low and I actually was able to enjoy it). Another movie I enjoyed in recent years was Oblivion... though its only partially to do with space, most of it is spent on earth. Liked Ender's Game too, but that didn't do well enough to get the rest of the books turned into movies. The movie Gravity was fun, though inaccurate. The Martian was by far one of the best space movies in recent memory.
I have also commented on Dawes as pretty much my only "spoiler" if you will. saying the same thing. Miller may feel he has lost it all with Julie's death, and yet he still risked his life to get himself and Holden back to the Rocinante so he isn't completely gone. One of my personal favorite lines is when Amos is hooking them up to the auto-doc he says "You are pretty messed up, the machine keeps trying to switch to hospice". As a physician I can see that my role as a human being is very much at risk in the future!! If the auto doc can figure out who needs "hospice". Anyhow, these last two episodes are a real study in how two very different men handle what seems to be the most extreme stress possible! And pull through and survive. It is a mini apocalypse on the "garbage dump" of the Belt, Eros. Really glad you were able to finish Season 1 and again, like all of us, really looking forward to going on to Season 2 with you!
You make a great point about Miller choosing to keep fighting to get himself (and Holden) back to the Roci! I wonder how much of that was an actual desire to continue living and how much of it was his whole "going down swinging" philosophy that he espoused to Holden when they were in the arcade? Maybe a little of both. And then of course, he had his "vision" of Julie... and we've yet to see how THAT has really impacted him (or at least I've yet to see it haha)! And haha well, seems as though the auto doc was willing to give up on Miller before Amos and the crew were - so, maybe that goes to show you that having actual people on hand to make those kind of tough calls on a case by case basis will still be important! I'm looking forward to season 2 too!!!
So.... have you been keeping track of everything Miller has lost in line with Dawe's "maybe you haven't lost everything" comment? You originally assumed it just meant Julie would be found dead.
My two cents (will be interested to hear Molly's thoughts on this too) are that, at this point, Miller has indeed lost most of what's important to him. The important thing about that, though, is that much of that loss occurred before any of the events of this show. I think Miller's been in a downward spiral for a while. Julie, I think, was his last hope for redemption in his eyes, and with her gone now... well, let's just say he's in a pretty dark place at this point.

was waiting for that
Hi Molly, The stealth ships were built on Luna at The Bush Naval Shipyard. Errinwright is the Undersecretary(Vice Pres.) and Avasarala is Deputy Undersecretary. There were 100,000 people on Eros..remember Dresden's words to Mao "we can only learn by letting it learn" And I just got to stick up for Amos here, You keep giving all the credit to Miller for saving them in the hotel lobby, but really it's Amos who saves their asses there. Amos took out 3 of 4 killers, 2 before Miller ever showed up. If Amos hadn't hadn't been on it from the moment they walked in, they would have all been slaughtered. If you notice on the Roci he agrees with Semi..till he pulls a gun and threatens Naomi, oops lol I know you prob. know all this but Amos is my guy, and sometimes his contributions get overlooked because of how nuanced his character is and Wes's portrayal of him is :) You know everything you are supposed to know right now. I really appreciated the way they laid out the seasons, they do things different on this show. All your questions will be answered and plenty more twist and turns incoming! Thanks Molly xox <3
Haha I understand what you're saying! And you're totally right about the importance of Amos's role in the hotel shootout. I do remember when I watched that scene that Holden, Naomi, and Alex were all casually walking about, chatting, while Amos very, very clearly was aware that something bad was about to happen and he sprang into action extremely quickly. They wouldn't have even lasted until Miller arrived if Amos hadn't been watching everything and didn't take action when he did! I felt that the entire interaction between Amos and Semi was interesting. Personally, I felt as though Amos understood Semi and the two of them were in agreement about a lot of things. As you said, he agreed when Semi said they should leave Holden and Miller. And the two of them obviously came to some sort of "understanding" about the possibly infected Belter, who they either left behind (or killed) on the way there. I think, in the end, the problem was that Semi didn't take a moment to stop and realize that Amos would extend the same logic to him in that moment that he did to the Belter (and even to Miller and Holden re: leaving them behind). As soon as Semi became a threat, he had to be stopped - even if Amos felt his logic was right. And Semi went way too far with pulling the gun on Naomi. So, I can see why Amos acted the way he did (especially if he then thought "this guy thinks like I do, so, if he ever believes Naomi is a threat to him again in the future, he'll not hesitate to kill her, and I won't have that" - or something along those lines). With all that being said... I don't feel that Amos necessarily made the wrong choice. And given that Miller can sometimes possess the same attitude, I feel as though he might understand on some level. But I still think, given how important Semi seemed to be in his childhood, he won't be able to easily forgive that, regardless of Amos's reasons... which is why I wish Amos had found a less lethal way to subdue him! But, I can definitely see both sides of it!
Pour one out Fo Da Belt! It was kinda weird to leave the story at that point for the season finale. Prolly more budget concerns than story choice at the time. The first season almost feels like a prologue in a lot of ways, so different in feel to seasons 2&3. I get those BSG/GOT comparisons for the series, but can’t help but think Babylon 5 has had some kind of major influence with it’s deeper story/character arcs and politics on this show. It’s all good regardless :)
I definitely hear what you're saying regarding BSG/GoT and Babylon 5! Personally, given that I haven't read the books (yet haha) I felt that the season finale was satisfying. My biggest questions were resolved (mostly) and we got to see Miller and Holden/Roci crew come together and I think we're set up in a good place for season 2. That being said, maybe I'll have a different opinion once I read the first book. We'll see! :)
YAY!! enjoyed it all. Excellent insights as usual! Im too tired to comment further but what I can say (and the others will back me up) is, it gets even better!!
Thank you!!! Haha no worries, I can relate to being too tired to comment. I'm excited to see what comes next. I felt like the first season was excellent so now I'm trying to imagine how it'll continue to top itself!
Hey Molly. Glad you are feeling a bit better and glad you are enjoying this amazing show. I was wondering. Back before you started S1E01 you mentioned that you had heard that the series had been compared to both BSG and GOT. Now that you have gotten through S1, I am curious what your take on those ideas are now. I will probably have the same question once you finish S2. I promise you. It just keeps getting better.
Ooo great question Scott! Well, now that I've had the chance to watch one full season, I personally think that each show is similar in certain ways (but vastly different in others). While BSG and The Expanse are both sci-fi, for example, The Expanse feels less like a genre show (if that makes sense). It feels like a combination of a political drama, a character piece, and a detective story - just one that is set largely in space haha. Personally, I think this puts The Expanse closer to GoT than BSG, overall. Even though the last couple seasons of GoT have seen an increase in the fantasy elements (due to the story winding down), I think you could fairly say of the first few seasons, that it felt more like a political drama and character piece (and even mystery, for season 1) than a fantasy series too. The intertwining cast of well developed characters who each have their own storylines (that can be separate but are all connected) like Miller, the Roci, Fred Johnson, Avasarala, etc. is similar to GoT as well. I think that BSG and The Expanse share certain elements in regards to tempo and tone. So, each show manages to pretty well demonstrate the sort of lifestyle people on ships are living - where life mostly involves a lot of down time (which can lead to interesting character interactions), interspersed with moments of sheer panic and tension where you could easily die in a matter of seconds. They also both have a more gritty feel than most science fiction, which can be rather idealistic. That being said, there was something kind of... I don't know... claustrophobic about BSG (which was certainly intentional), as it was the last of humanity stuck on a few ships, outrunning those who wanted to destroy them. Whereas, The Expanse to me has examples of places where it feels claustrophobic (Ceres) and plenty of examples of the opposite as well. The universe itself feels open and expansive, which BSG did not really.
