Hello all! Here is the extended reaction for season 1 episode 8 of The Expanse! That ending was very depressing!!!
I'm hoping to have the edited version up before the end of the evening! Now I have to choose which day next week I will sit down and watch 9 and 10 in a row!
All the best,
Molly

Art is called Semi, short for Semitimba, though I don't think we've actually heard anyone say it at this point. It might be in the graphic when we first see him in MIller's phone. The detail work on the panels, hand terminals always impresses. What it's like to wander around in a space suit with helmet to helmet dialogue, dead sounds because no air. I would also suggest taking a little time before S2, at least wait for the Amazon thing to go through on 2/8. I am positive that there are scenes that aired and are on DVD but not on the current Prime S2. Not many scenes but a worthy character is meeting is missed. But having some time to digest where the series sits at the end of ep 10 then watching 1 and 2 of the second season together because when they first aired they were aired together.
I believe Molly's already been alerted to watch the UHD (4K) versions of seasons 1 and 2 on Prime; these are the original versions as released by the studio, with full credits, no missing scenes, and every glorious F-bomb intact. They're already in place for Seasons 1 and 2; I believe the Season 3 UHD stuff will be up as of the 2/8 release. But 1 and 2 are there now.
Good stuff Molly. I was going to recommend watching 8-10 together, but not everyone has time to watch 3 eps of anything. 9-10 together works well too, we can discuss choices in storytelling after you've seen them all.
As much as this is an "edge of your seat" episode with the crew finding the "blue blob" on the Anubis and then of course the ultimate meeting of Holden and Miller in the Blue Falcon, hold on to that seat because you are in for a real roller coaster ride! The book Leviathan Wakes actually does a great job of building this story as well with chapters leading individual points of view to the moment of finding Julie in the shower like that. Oh and Dawes foreshadowing is not done... My way of doing this is to load up my Amazon Prime series and run it in sync with your reaction. It works pretty well even though I don't have the HD edition. I just silence the episode and keep your volume up. Not sure how others are doing it.
That’s a good idea, I have been trying to sync up the sound with of show on a big screen and reaction on a tablet, so frustrating. The problem I have is the season is purchased through iTunes, which is edited differently at times than Amazon prime. I start getting echo and then completely out of sync. I’m just a little reluctant to give up surround sound for the show, it is definitely a show that benefits greatly from a cinematic experience. I prolly wouldn’t notice it slowly going out of sync in show silence though. The Expanse going worldwide on Amazon can’t come soon enough! Definitely would be down with a better solution to it.
Damn... you don't miss much. It's nice to see someone that is so detail oriented and attentive. Something about the stealth tech that is in use on the show that I found very interesting when reading the books. I only mention this because of the things Kenzo was saying when they found the Anubis. It isn't really addressed in the show, but one of the surprising problems that Expanse type ships have in the coldness of space is an extreme excess of heat produced by the engines. It seems a bit counter intuitive at first (at least to me) given how ridiculously cold it is out there, but ships can easily overheat if something isn't done about it. Your car has a radiator that has air forced through it to carry the waste heat from your engine away so that it doesn't overheat and seize up. Obviously the lack of air flow in space means that they must find other ways to get rid of it that don't involve air. You can imagine that a hot ship can easily be seen through thermal imagery. The stealth ships obviously have expensive tech that can mask it well and I guess disapate it in some way. The radar absorption qualities of our current stealth technology would only be improved a few hundred years in the future I would guess, but masking the heat from those massive engines is the real kicker and I would guess the bulk of the expense. Sorry for nerding out. I just found that aspect from the books interesting as Hell.
Thank you so much for your compliments and for the detailed information about the stealth technology! I find that fascinating and is definitely something I would not have otherwise thought of or understood. I'm looking forward to reading the books once I finish the first couple of seasons, so that I can become even more immersed in the wider universe. But, until then, it's a huge help to me to have people fill in the blanks, so to speak, with comments like these. And please never apologize for nerding out! That's what I do constantly! haha
Trivia: Both authors of the book series have a cameo in this ep. They walk off the belter ferry onto Eros right in front of Miller. I don't want to comment too much till after finale but next ep is my fav of S1. Semi and Miller grew up together wards of Ceres, "on the street" Dan is correct about being very careful about spoilers in comments on You Tube. People mean well, but are saying too much at this point. And lol you don't need help, you pick up everything with no problem!! The end of this ep is really sad, poor Miller, poor Julie! Big suprises incoming <3 Thanks Molly!
Thx for the heads up, can’t believe I missed that after the amount of times I’ve seen that episode :D
So I don't think you noticed it, its just a little humor, but when they are in their space suits and Alex is watching their helmet cams, it displays their names. For the spy, they put "Canary"... It was indeed a tense episode... coming up you have 9 & 10 that aired as a 2 hour special.... followed by S2 1 & 2 that aired as a 2 hour special if i remember correctly... I won't tell you where the climax is, but the book 1 climatic ending is not the end of season 1.... so from here on out, you get several episodes in a row that combined, could make a several hour fast moving sprint to the end of the book. Its hard not to binge the whole group of episodes at once.... lucky for you, you don't have to wait a year :) It really is great seeing Amos's first reaction to Miller. Miller of course when he threatens Holden has absolutely no idea why Holden is there, and doesn't seem to care.... he is just singularly focused on what he went there for. Semi is a childhood friend of Miller's, which as you pointed out, Miller having friends is kind of a rare thing. Love your thoughts and guessing of what is coming up. I'm really biting my tongue. Lets just say, lots of good guesses... some are right, some are way off. Can't wait to see the next few :)
Ahhhh! I didn't notice that, you are right! That is HILARIOUS! I am going to have to go back and look that up, just because I want to see it lol. It's interesting that the books and seasons end in different places. However, I can understand why showrunners might make a decision like that if they felt the story dictated it (at least, based on what I've seen with GoT - especially with seasons 3 and 4). I'm sure that translating the material between mediums required some difficult choices to be made. All that being said, I'll keep that in mind regarding the upcoming episodes! I may need to make sure I always have a couple of hours set aside whenever I am looking to sit down and do a reaction video (just in case I need to watch two episodes in a row haha). Honestly, I'm glad to hear that some of my thoughts and theories are way off! I'd hate to guess everything and not have any surprises in store for me. I love being surprised!
I'm very interested to see your reaction to the remainder of this first arc (and beyond, of course). I respect the hell out of the decision by the showrunners to allow the story the time needed, rather than forcing it within seasonal constraints, though I doubt the decision did them any favors in terms of ratings. Luckily enough they're no longer bound by basic cable network constraints. Also, as my first comment across the platforms, it only feels right that I should wish you good luck in the future of your channel and patreon. It was your reactions to The Expanse that caught my attention but your current lineup of reactions earned my support.
Thank you so, so much! I am very grateful for the support and happy that my general lineup has sparked your interest! I also agree with what you said regarding The Expanse moving from basic cable to Amazon studios. While I do not yet know what you mean regarding the first arc and seasonal constraints (but I'll surely find out soon haha) I do feel that the move to Amazon will give them substantially more freedom and opportunities than the would otherwise have. Thanks again!
Yay! Can't wait. Hopefully people can stop spoiler comments, there are so many twists and turns over the next 2 seasons... every time you get answers to one mystery, there are several more that pop up
