You decide! Should the card design be updated?

Hey heroes!

When I first started making item cards, they were for myself. What I had, at the time, were 3x5" index card sized plastic sleeves and storage containers. As a result, I made these cards at that size, and, well, never really thought to change it up.

But it's not good to never make changes out of complacency. The design of the existing cards is fine, albeit simple, and I suspect they'd probably be more accessible if they were in a different size.

That's where I need your feedback. The above image is a display of the new, proposed design update for the Patreon-exclusive cards. It can either stay the same size, or change to become tarot-sized.

So:

Do you want a new design? Do you want them to be tarot sized, like most other D&D cards?

OR, would you rather they stay the same? Do you not want to have differently sized or design cards now that you're already using the existing ones?

Here's the one caveat: there are far too many items at this point that I can't feasibly go back and revise and update them all. What I could do, however, is redo the ones from this just month and continue using new designs going forward.

If you wanna print these new ones out, too, I've attached them below. Give 'em a go!

Let me know what you think in the votes and in the comments below!

Is it bad that I would like to have both sizes? Tarot size works to print new cards that fit the rest of the item cards made by the deck of many, but i would hate for those who've been using the 3x5 size to lose their uniformity.

My two coppers, I prefer the original size since they will integrate into the existing deck. Changing the backs every so often so there are seasons or series seems like a neat thing though.

My only request is when you send out an item that has a curse please include a version that does not mention the curse! That way we can give the item to a player and let them try it then then hand them the cured version! This would be great, thanks.

This has been something on my mind, too. It's a little more overhead, for sure, but not a big problem going forward. I'll do my best to do this!

I would like to see cards with info on one side and picture on other with no folding. I would try to have 2 sizes one for standard and one for very long text.

Right now, if a card doesn't require folding, it doesn't include that: it just stays at 3x5. The fold lines only appear if the text runs long. I'm seeing a lot of people asking for the illustration on one side and the text on the other, though.

I've seen a few people share a similar opinion, but thought I'd put mine in any way. Having all the card's information on one side (no folding)is a must. it means better resolution for the art and much more readable text for items with larger/longer descriptions.

Are you saying to keep the art on one side, too? That gets difficult, if not impossible, when you get to the *long* items that need to be printed on both the fronts and backs (certain legendaries and artifacts, primarily). As far as getting them all to fit on single cards, without folding for length, is also unfeasible without drastically changing the size of the text between cards, which goes against your point about increasing readability and makes the daily creation of those cards more time consuming. Some item descriptions are very long, while others are very short.

Personally, I don't use the physical cards regardless of their size because they have to be folded to be a standard size. I would much prefer the text layered over the image so the size would remain consistent between cards without folding, and at that point standardizing to tarot size would be ideal. I do like that new back image though

I print cards out (we play in person) and like the look and feel of variation in the my adventurer's collection of handouts. The change going forward also makes the timeline of your creations instantly recognizable: new size is newer stuff.

I mostly use the cards digitally, but whenever I print them, I find them to be just a tad too bulky, because all the other cards I use are the reference cards by GF9 which use the standard poker size (3"x2,5"). All sleeves I have are that size too, so your item cards don't fit them. Instead of the longer tarot format I'd much prefer a new design in poker size. However, I do recognize that it might be difficult if not impossible to fit all of the art and the text onto such a small space. If the choice is only between tarot size and regular as is, I'd say keep the size they are right now. Keep being awesome, already very much looking forward to receiving my KS book.

If you keep all the text on one side, you can definitely fit as much if not more on a poker card than on half of even the tarot size above.

I don't generally use the cards at all (the no-background PNGs are perfect for Roll20 because I can put them on a handout AND semi-conspicuously hide them in the background of a map). But if I DID have a game going at a physical table, these slim cards would be a pain. 3x5" or 4x6" that can be printed directly on cardstock would work best in that case. Maybe just provide a default background image file that can be printed on all backs that way? Then you can maximize the available space on the front of a card. Only way I'd bother to print & cut cards out of letter-size paper is if they were 3.5x2.5" to match the standard spell card size.

I use the cards digitally. The new design would be borderline unusable as it has a fold. If I printed, I'd use cardstock so the fold wouldn't work then either :(

These are both the print versions, not the digital one. Digital ones never include the fold, since you don't need to print 'em in the first place!
