[Common item week] Elite Workshop Day 1 — What kind of Common item should we make?
Hey heroes! It's time to make a new item together! This week is a special one: let's make a common item! This is a fun theme that's been run before. Common items are virtually mechanically bare or bare-bones, but offer great opportunities for low-stakes inclusion in your games.
Please vote on a direction and leave a comment with an item idea that's as refined or as vague as you like.
Three or more of your commented suggestions relating to the winning item direction will be up for a follow-up vote tomorrow!
Remember that this will be an official Saddlebag item and will not credit anyone for the ideas generated through this process. Please only bring ideas you're comfortable with sharing to the workshop!
Let's make something exciting together! See you back here tomorrow!
Keep on adventuring!

Ring of the Spritely Seamstress Wondrous Item, Uncommon While wearing this ring, you are proficient with weaver's tools, and your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses those tools. You can use a bonus action to store or retrieve weaver's tools in an extradimensional space within the ring. It cannot store anything else. When you find this item, it has a 50% chance of already containing a set of weaver's tools. You can use the magic on the ring to summon a spectral sprite. Given appropriate materials, the sprite can magically sew for you any nonmagical garment of your specification in an hour. Afterwards, the sprite vanishes, and it cannot be summoned again for 1d10 days.
My First Wand! Wand, Uncommon This wand was put together by an incredibly talented and magically gifted child. While wielding the wand, your cantrips have a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls. You can also use the wand to cast the Prestidigitation spell. You can use the wand to cast the Magic Missile spell. After you do so, you can't do it again until the next dawn.
Jenny's Embroidered Wall Ornament Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement) This wall ornament was embroidered by a hag and is infused with magic in woven words of power. When you attune to this item, you must place it in a room that is no bigger than 30 feet on a side. The location must not yet have any associated lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing all ties), you can make 1 lair action to speak one of the ornament's words of power to cast a spell. Both you and the target must be inside the room and within 30 feet of the ornament. Live. You cast Healing Word. It uses a spellcasting ability modifier of +3. Laugh. You cast Hideous Laughter (DC 15). Love. You cast Charm Person (DC 15). Once a creature has been targeted by a word of power, it cannot be targeted by the ornament again for 1 hour.
For deep flavor: **Storyteller's Tome** *Wondrous item, common (might require attunement)* This book is full of thick pages that appear blank. When you open the book to a blank page while telling a story, the book creates an illusory representation of events that fits within the cube immediately above the page. This illusion vanishes when the page is turned, and reappears if you turn to the page again. There are 10 such pages in the book, and as an action you can speak the book's command word to clear all of them. > An interesting find for a party, as it may have a story stored within it when found, but only shown as images without context. **Concrete Contract** *Wondrous item, common* This block of concrete is used to store particularly valuable agreements. When two creatures press their hands to its surface it becomes a thick liquid and their hands sink in slightly. While two creatures are in contact with the object in this way, any verbal agreements they make are automatically inscribed on the top of the block. Any terms that are not accepted vanish from the surface. When both parties verbally agree to a set of terms, the concrete sets and their signatures appear next to their handprints. Once a contract has been set, the block becomes permanently inert. Any attempt to change or deface the writing causes the block to crumble into dust. > A dramatic way to agree to things. Also provides a written record of a particular individual's deals. **Jar of Cranial Preservation** *Wondrous item, common* This ceramic jar is covered in inscribed alchemical symbols and covered with a heavy lid. You can place the head of a medium or smaller creature that has been dead for less than 1 hour into the jar. If the jar is then kept still for 1 hour, the jar cracks quickly and turns to dust, leaving behind the head. The head will not rot or decay due to the natural processes of decomposition, and will remain perfectly preserved. > For the collections of lunatics or the most macabre method of preservation for speak with dead. **Heart Dust** *Wondrous item, common* This fancifully embroidered bag contains 1d12 + 8 uses of a glittering, diamond-like dust. As an action, you can take a pinch of dust out if the bag and sprinkle it onto an object. This dust adheres the surface, becoming invisible and intangible, and records your current emotional state onto that object, causing any creature that comes into contact with it to feel that emotion. The dust can be removed as an action by a creature that is aware of its presence. > Good for paranoia, mostly. Also to set the tone for certain scenes.
Fledgling Hero Weapon (Shortsword), common A wooden shortsword that deals bludgeoning instead. Its always under the effects of minor illusion, appearing as a flaming greatsword.
Thoughts for “Deep Flavor” items: Dew, the Infuser Wondrous Item, common This tea infuser is contained inside of a tiny water elemental and is enchanted to make the elemental tame and friendly. Dew will respond to basic commands you would give a pet and gladly will sit in a bag, pocket, or on someone’s shoulder. When you feed Dew tea leaves and any other additions you’d like for the tea, it will absorb them into the tea infuser and heat or cool itself to brew the tea inside of its own body to your liking, changing Dew’s personality slightly depending on what type of tea and additions you’ve added. By providing Dew with a cup and some fresh water, it will dispense the tea water it contains into the cup and absorb the fresh water to replace the amount lost. Inkteller Wondrous Item, common This amulet contains a vial of ink encased in a fake jewel. While wearing this amulet, you can animate any tattoos on your body as you will. When not focusing on animating your tattoos, or if you take off this amulet, the tattoos return to their original state.
A mirror similar to the one from Beauty & The Beast. Could be a starting item, used to connect a character to their home they left behind, or other backstory related aspect.
Perhaps we can do an item that guantees a caster successfully pulls off a higher spell level than they should be capable of. But it inflicts a negative status effect or levels of exhaustion.
