If we added an option of using the strength save to pull closer, or a Con DC 13 or be poisoned, would you still consider it uncommon or do you think it’d be a rare at that point?

Poison's pretty good as a status condition. If you were to do it that way, I'd say you want to make it use 1 of 3 (1d3 at dawn) charges and let the pull be automatic, but have it be forced to make a DC 13 Con save or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
