Essence of Rage

Potion, rare

This bubbling red liquid is always warm and tastes of iron and bitter raisins. You can drink this potion as a bonus action. When you do, you enter a rage that lasts for 1 minute or until you're knocked unconscious. This rage grants you the same effects as a 1st-level barbarian's class feature with the following exception: if you end your turn and you haven't attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then, you take 1d4 psychic damage and your rage does not end. You can enter this rage even if you're wearing heavy armor.

You should never bottle up your emotions. Especially your anger.

The beauty of this item is as a plot device. The party barbarian gets kidnapped in a major city. A far cry from anything the group would expect. The wisp thin sorcerer? Sure! But not the big barbarian. An investigation ensues! Through warrens of tunnels infested with wild rats and dastardly kobolds, the party pursues rumors only to find a large, well furnished subterranean lair belonging to the city's wizard! At the heart of this citadel, you find the barbarian strung up, upside down, all manner of needles and spikes prodding them. The wizard is giving a soliloquy- "Give up, get angry, rage at me... I will need your hatred and power, and then bottle it up. Sell it to the highest bidder. You are helpless, just give in...." and an epic battle ensues as the party tries desperately to combat the wizard and their minions while maybe freeing the barbarian in the process. Once finished, they find three heavy iron chests, layered with midnight blue velvet. In each chest lies a bottle, skull shaped and filled with a warm ruby liquid. These vials cost a terrible, terrible price to make. Is using them worth it? Perhaps.
