Re: your other questions, "released" meaning shot from the mechanism. "Detached" would mean taking the net off the staff. If you retract the net back into the head of the staff, you release the creature because the net gets coiled back up inside the metal head of the quarterstaff.

You'd just have to retract the net with a bonus action, releasing what was caught inside it (if anything). The net is connected to the staff, so you can't attack with it if it's holding a creature in its net!

And when you say that the net has been released do you mean cut from the quarterstaff or that the net has been activated? If I retract the the net it says I potentially release the creature? What does that mean exactly?

Okay so can you explain this a little better to me? If I use the net on a creature in melee range, I cannot make another attack unless I destroy the net?
