Arkanorod

Rod, very rare

This rod is a strange device from a far-flung age and can sometimes be found in the lairs of sphinxes that have traveled through time. The rod has two halves with markings along their edge. You can use a bonus action to twist the two halves to align the markings in one the four ways detailed below.

Barrier. The rod emits a magical shield from it, allowing you to wield it by holding the rod. Treat it as a +2 shield. Whenever a creature makes a melee attack against you while you’re holding the shield, that creature takes 2 lightning damage.

Baton. The rod emits a magical baton from its end. Treat the baton as a +2 club, except it uses a d8 damage die and deals lightning damage instead of bludgeoning. If you hit a creature with the baton and roll a 8 on the damage die, the target can’t make opportunity attacks until the end of your next turn.

Blaster. The rod emits a magical blast of electricity from its end. Treat the blaster as a +2 light crossbow, except it doesn’t have the two-handed or loading properties, creates its own ammunition, and uses a d6 damage die and deals lightning damage instead of piercing. If you hit a creature with the blaster and roll an 6 on the damage die, the target can’t make opportunity attacks until the end of your next turn.

Off. The rod is turned off, preventing it from using any time from its power source until the rod’s halves are switched to a different option.

The rod runs on a power source that’s fueled by magic. The rod can be used for up to 4 hours before the power source is empty. Deduct the time you use it in increments of 10 minutes from the power source’s total time. You know how much remaining time the source has while holding the rod. Any creature can use an action to expend a spell slot level of 1st level or higher into the power source, adding to its total remaining time, by touching the rod as the spell slot is expended. The power source regains a number of hours of power equal to the spell slot level that was expended into it. When found, the rod has 1d4 hours of power remaining, and it can’t have more than 4 hours at a time.

Overcharge. Once per turn when you deal lightning damage to a creature using the rod, you can deduct 2 hours of time from its power source to force that creature to make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is stunned until the end of your next turn.

"An' what am I supposed tae do wi' all this, lad? It's all broken pieces fer things I can barely make heads or tails of tae begin with!"
The lad smiled, his tone tuned perfectly to disarm and persuade. "I dunno, but I know if anyone can make use of it all it'd be a master craftsman like you!"
Mender was impressed, in spite of himself. He knew he was being played, that the lad had finally picked up enough of the art of haggling to turn it back on Mender. Enough to bring a tear to the eye.
"Alright, alright," he waved a hand theatrically, "But thrice the usual scavenger's fee is mad for a pile o' broken parts. I can give ye double, but that's my last offer!"
"Done!"
And as the lad strode off with his payment, Mender turned again to the pile of scrap. Best he could tell, it looked like an armory had been mixed up together then run through a red dragon's breath. None of the single pieces had enough of that mysterious spark to get them working, but maybe together…
