Splintering Spear

Weapon (spear), rare (requires attunement)

This spear is made from magical, intertwined willow branches. You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

The spear has 6 charges and regains 1d6 expended charges daily at dawn. Once per turn when you make an attack with the spear and miss, you can expend 1 of its charges to use one of the following properties, based on the type of attack you made.

Melee. If you made a melee attack with the spear, one of its willow branches lashes outward at the target to strike it. Reroll the attack roll; you must use the new result.

Thrown. If you made a ranged attack with the spear, each creature within 10 feet of the target (including the initial target) must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 + 2 piercing damage, as splinters and whiplike branches lash outward from the spear.

After using either property, the lashing branches fall to the ground and begin to take root, eventually growing into a normal willow tree.

Decades after the battle, the site became known for the abundance of weeping willows that grew there, as if nature itself mourned all the lives lost upon that ground.
