Love this album
Catching up on Record Club today, love the variety we're getting with this show, whether through music or guests. Jason was awesome!
Hell yea dude. This album is great. I do like Ride the Lightning more though. Orion, Master of Puppets, Battery are my faves. I think Orion is one of their best songs tbh. Solid 4.5/5.
Never been super into Metallica but they might have the best band name ever. It made them seem like the definitive metal band to me just based on the name alone. I liked this album. Was expecting it to be much more produced so I was glad that it sounded a little more raw. 3/5 for me.
Metallica is the first band I ever got into. I went from saying I "don't like music" to being obsessed with everything they'd done as a teenager and I've followed whatever they're up to ever since. They're the reason I ended up wanting to learn guitar and become a musician as well. I don't necessarily consider Puppets to be my favorite by them but I absolutely understand the fanfare it always receives. 8 amazing tracks front to back. It's a special one, for sure.

Probably my third favorite Metallica album. Never really understood the band's propensity to go over 7 minutes, I feel like a lot of their songs are like a minute too long. My favorite Metallica tracks are usually the ones around 5-6 minutes rather than the 8 minute tracks typically found on Master of Puppets. I love long-form compositions too so its not like I dislike a track that goes long, in fact I tend to prefer them. I love extended bridges and solo sections, so I'm not sure where the disconnect is. It certainly isn't because they're a metal band, either, since I love that too. That said, still a beast of an album. It knows how to hit hard in a way that resonates with a much larger audience that most metal bands have never figured out. Battery, Damage Inc, and the title track are standouts to me, but I remember really loving Welcome Home when I was a teenager.
I was really looking forward to this episode! Metallica is the first band I ever really got into back in the beginning of high school and I also have a lot of love and nostalgia for their first five albums. I will say I do prefer Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All.... though. I might get some flack for this. I think that Battery, Master of Puppets (possibly their best song), The Thing That Should Not Be and Orion are amazing, but the other songs on the album have never really done much for me. That's just me though, I definitely get why people do like them. Anyways, loved hearing you two talk about it and it was great to have Jason on! That connection and info on Cliff was especially interesting. I can't wait to hear what you think about Pavement! Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is my favorite album by them. I think you'll enjoy it. Hope everyone had a great day! :)
I love your video game reviews on Bloomberg, Jason.
Welcome Jason! I enjoyed hearing the personal connections to Metallica more than this album TBH. Battery, Welcome Home and Orion were the only ones I was into. I stand by Patti Smith’s Gloria is a killer cover. She did a wild cover of Hey Joe, too. She does this whole spoken word intro about Patty Hearst and her time with the Symbionese Liberation Army. Ooh Pavement! I listened to their whole discography earlier this year. You probs know “Cut Your Hair,” if any of the tracks. (There’s a huge deluxe edition you don’t need to listen to unless you really get into Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.) Happy Thanksgiving, Record Clubbers 🦃
