Mega64 Movie Club: Obsession
After a brief hospital stay Shawn is back and ready to talk about one of the biggest movies of the year! We were scared? Maybe

Sorry but probably the most overrated movie in the last 10 years for me. I'd give it a 6/10 and really impressive for a youtuber movie. But it still feels like a youtuber movie. It felt so unrealistic and childish at times, with the most unlikeable people ever. One of the opening shots of the pill bottle with the 'do not eat' written on the bottom for the camera to see was really goofy, as well as the cgi money falling from the sky.
I actually liked the billion dollar scene, it showed the ridiculous lack of limits the willow had, the fact it just ends and the two of them are just separate now is a little weird, but it made sense for Ian as a character. He was expecting to say his wish, snap it and then tell Bear "Look, nothing happened." That felt fine with his character, it also demonstrated how ridiculous the willow is as a tool. It removes the speculation of "what if you wish for x" it shows you even the most unlikely of thing coming to be
New spiderman is the best Tom Holland one but doesn't touch the Raimi ones
This felt like it would blow someone away if they had never seen a horror movie before, and I felt like maybe that was true for a lot of the audience
I thought this was way better than Weapons, and most ppl seem to agree
The homeless man in Mulholland drive still scares me. Rocco is very on point on how to truly show something spooky
Shawn hit the nail on the head with the Pixar effect. Disney managed to turn comic books into movies so perfectly, good and bad.
The guy at universal announcing her with 'you could be her next obsession' told me everything I need to know about how they view the movie purely for profit and have no understanding of the actual film. It's like she's based purely on an elevator pitch. She's literally a victim of abuse and the final girl of the film. It's like having Sally from texas chainsaw walk around, what would be the point? She's traumatized.
By the time we get to the “kill me” scene, bear has already: -had sex with Nikki after pretty much confirming the wish worked and she’s basically not in control of herself -heard her screaming in agony/terror when he called the hotline -seen her do so much fucked up shit/hurt herself And never really once been like “I should help her get out of this”, so I’m not sure why Rocco expected he would have suddenly been like that for even a second for the “kill me” scene
The “kill me” scene really demonstrates the depths of Bears selfishness, where he’s more offended she’d rather die than “be with him” than he is distressed at knowing the shear misery he’s put her through
“The bit where they’re both obsessed with each other should have been longer” Nothing would have happened
Yeah I'm surprised they both wanted this. I think the film would've just fizzled out if it went that way. They said they were waiting for the film to throw in a twist or another layer to the curse, but I never thought that was coming. Obsession is a very simple story executed well so the characters can take the focus.
"how did i shot web" 😂
I interpreted the weird movents of Nikki as the ‘wish’ moving her around as a puppet when it’s hold over het wasnt as strong and she was about to regain control. Like she was resisting too much for it to make the movements look natural
her peformance veering into deadite territory the longer the movie went on was so sick
Thought brand new day was totally fine. I dont quite get how this one was much better than any of the other spideys.
the scene where they're kissing in bed and she snaps out of it has really stuck with me
Happy Shawn is feeling better
I think I generally agree with Rocco about them having her in the theme park. It doesn't really seem like her presence there plays off of the more serious aspects of the movie. I totally get why people would question it, but it kind of assumes a level of depth to the film which I don't quite think it earns, or intended. The themes and ethics are made very obvious in the film, but they still chose to play up some of the more comedic and extreme elements of the character's persona too. If everything had been played super straight and dour in the movie, then it would feel a lot more murky to me.
The new spiderman movies don’t do it for me. They’re fun watches but forgettable. The Raimi movies do a much better job of characterizing Peter Parker
Glad Shawn is feeling better
