Mega64 Movie Club: Widow's Bay

Watched Widows Bay after Shawn brought it up on the podcast and absolutely loved it. Great recco

Derrick calling Rocco an asshole for rudely brushing away sales associates but thinking he isn't for leaving his trash in the movie theater is comedy gold.

That fourth episode with the cursed book creeped me the fuck out, I LOVED the way they revealed it at the end with the cop going "what the hell are you doing?" Perfect blend of humour and horror imo.

The first episode I thought was okay until at the very end where it goes pretty dark and when it shows directed by Hiro Murai and everything made perfect sense. Widows Bay is like Atlanta for white people. The horror episodes of Atlanta are exactly like this show which I loved and am still horrified by.

I watched because of Shawn and I am halfway done. Absolutely love it so far! I do have to agree with Rocco regarding missing breadcrumbs. I feel like the episodes have me trying to piece together things but then a little let down when it feels wrapped up at the end of the episode with the reveals. I would like a little more unanswered things but I am still really enjoying it! Also, as someone who lives in New England, the characters in the show are really funny to me. They are not entirely unbelievable, even if they are a bit stereotypical I am enjoying it and all the random New England lore dropping like the first episode with the writer and telling him “Oh I get it, you want to be Salem” was 100% it lol. I also appreciated the Easter eggs to give homage to Stephen King, who obviously has a big influence on the overall vibe of the show. Anyways, I can’t wait to finish it and think it’s a great show, and really like the levels of humor in it and the levels of horror. Apple is killing it with shows lately!! Please do a movie club wrap up episode on the series! :)

After the season finale episode, definitely hope they review the remaining episodes. I bet Rocco will like the increasingly Lost-vibes of the second half of the season.

Y’all should give Atlanta a shot! Donald Glover once said something about part of his inspiration being like “twin peaks with rappers” — idk how much it’s actually like that vs its own thing, but it’s super well done and creative and yall might dig it!

Overall enjoyed it, but I think I’m more on Rocco’s side. I wish there was a little more connecting each episode together, and the humor/vibe was a little too goofy to me at times. Still glad I checked it out and will probably finish the season.

Cherish and I had been watching this and we fucking love it. Threads the line of horror and comedy perfectly.

I watched because of Shawn praising it. I have currently watched 6 episodes and am loving it so far. Cannot wait to continue watching tonight

I watched this show cause Shawn recommended it and really loved it! Rocco’s point about wanting to be breadcrumbed was interesting, just cause I viewed the sort of “monster of the week” or individual event/mystery each episode AS the breadcrumbing towards the bigger deal with the island. Like the hag and the ghosts and the tome are all the build up rather than one and done storylines.
