New Mosquito video should be up in a few mins.

Well, I had so many comments in the Mosquito vs. P-38 video that I started to make a video about the comments. However one of them took up so much space I just make it a stand alone video.

I want to talk about the myth that the Mosquito, a wonderful airplane could have replaced the B-17s over Europe. It's not true, but still worth exploring.

Hi John, I'm sorry I missed your question. I do think Mosquitoes could have replaced Lancasters for a lot of Lancaster missions, not all, but most of the normal night raid stuff. I think two Mosqitoes for every Lancaster would have more than done the job and further damaged the Luftwaffe as they could have mixed in night fighters very effectively.

So, that doesn’t answer the question I asked. I could get upset that Greg made it look like my question was a Mossie fanboy question, but then, I’m not the one exerting the effort to answer these things. As a mentor to me once said, “A fool can ask more questions than 20 wise men can answer.” That said, the original question from the Mosquito vs P38 video was basically “How many DH98’s would it take to replace an Avro Lanc, and would it have been worthwhile, in light of the hideous losses of Bomber Command, despite night operations?” Nowhere did I reference B17’s or daylight operations. If England were material limited, how many Merlin engine equivalents would have created the same amount of destruction with non-precision area night bombing? Would the special plywood have spared duralumin usage profitably? If they were manpower limited, would woodworkers been more available than metal bashers? Would crew limitations have been eased? Pilots? All on an equivalent-destruction (=bomb load?) mission basis, not a 1:1 aircraft basis. What would have been the impact of a fleet of DH98’s that delivered an equivalent bomb load? Would increased cruise speed reduce time over enemy territory and lower attrition? A fleet of DH98’s would have been larger, so what would have been the impact of prey/predator ratio vs the German night fighters? AA gunnery? Could a mix of bomber and night fighters DH98’s been more lethal overall? Etc, etc.

Very insightful video thanks. I did some volunteer crew member training in a B-17 Bombercamp stockton and that was fun and I learned a lot about WW2 tech. (and dropped cement bombs)

Further to your video on "could the Mosquito have replaced the B-17" have you seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSlxqpl-p6w It's on that subject.

I think the better What If is B17 no Guns but with fighter support Vs Historical B17 , IE the bomber mafia was not in charge. How much better would a slick B17 be???

Greg, would love to see your video on if the b 24 was built using the most powerful engines available at the time: wright 2600, what its performance would have been

One of the YT channels I follow recently did a video on the subject of B-17 vs. Mosquito. (Thought it was Chris at Mil Av Hist, but apparently not.) The data they presented showed that there was a month where the average B-17 bomb load flown was less than the maximum possible bomb load of the Mosquito. But that the Mozzie bombers only averaged in that range later in the war than the month that the B-17s averaged that low a payload delivered.

Do you need any specific pictures from in a Mossie? I'm going to the Flying Heritage Museum next month and they have a nice one there.
