Mosquito vs. P-38 video is up.
It's ad free for the moment. I said a few years ago I wanted to do this comparison. I finally got around to it. The toughest part was deciding what versions to use for comparison. The bigger problem there is the Mossie because there are a lot of versions of that airplane that are one-dimensional. For example, a Mark IV bomber is only good as a bomber thus would forfeit any contest with a P-38 as a bomber destroyer. I think I settled on two good but comparable versions.

@Gavin Rae-Davies. Great point the De Havilland museum was awesome. When I went there also was a biologists there WHO actually had a bunch of insects as the DH planes were named after insects living near the factory. We had a great discussion and he also showed me a leech and there is no DH Leech BUT I suggested that would be the DH Vampire. It sprang to my mind because in 2016 I took a flight with a DH Vampire in Coventry, partly flying it myself. Obviously no Vampires live in the pond BUT Vampire sounds much cooler than leech. Kinda weird that we accidently met!
Regarding the pronounciation being "mozzie" or “mossy”, my gut reflex as a native is that mossy just makes me think of something covered in moss (which given our damp climate is quite common). Nowadays, when plagued with small biting insects one would complain about the "bloody mozzies". However, the keyword there is nowadays. Perhaps the deHavilland Aircraft Museum (home of the prototype) could rustle up some archive footage? On insta they're "dehavmuseum". They also have a functional Link Trainer if you need to brush up on your skills next time you're in the UK. They're barely 45 mins from Heathrow. 😁
Hi greg could you compare this 2 airplanes, with the german response?? Me 410 or ta 154
Hello Greg, I am a recent subscriber. Do you compile your charts (such as the mosquito bs p38 speed chart) for your videos anywhere?
Wondering if the gross weight differences is due to the larger internal fuel load and heavier gun load out? Probably no way to quantify this, wondering if there is any weight advantage to the balsa/ply wood construction? Also (x2) remember, long ago that the fighter bomber version of the. Ozzie was slower due to the flat windscreen (gun aiming optics) and the pure recce or bomber version had a more aerodynamic windscreen/canopy.
Nice video. One thing I've wondered is what the comparison would be between sending a single Lancaster vs. multiple Mosquitos. Would it have been remotely comparable? Better? Much worse? I always scratch my head at Bomber Command's casualty rate, despite using night operations. Many dimensions to the comparison.
Great video! I was only able to watch half last night, and find that now I have to wait until after the YT premiere to watch the rest. Boo!
I look forward to seeing this, Greg. Thanks. FWIW, in general, I always thought of the Mosquito as more of a fast attack bomber that could do fighter work and the opposite for the P-38 so I'm really looking forward to your comparison and conclusion.
I know, I suspect both groups are about to throw a fit.
Very cool! Looking forward to the coming chapters.
Cue the fanboy meltdown 🙄
What a treat! Can't wait to watch
