The ancient Magnus bride and Maria The Virgin Witch started off pretty good
I started watching both of these anime with my wife because she picked them.
And I gotta admit…
I enjoyed the story.
The quality is there. The writing is there. The lore development is there.
That’s actually why I thought of this post in the first place.
I was genuinely curious why shows like the ones my wife watches don’t get recommended more often.
Is it because y’all don’t like rewatching shows you’ve already seen?
Is it because people have never heard of them?
Is it because they’re good, but not the type of anime people think of first when they’re suggesting reactions?
Or is it just one of those things where the fanbase is quieter?
You don’t even have to change my mind. I’m not making this post like, “Why didn’t y’all tell me?!” lol.
I’m really just trying to understand how y’all think about these shows, what makes something popular in the suggestion rooms, and why certain good shows don’t get pushed as hard.
Because to me, some of these are better than a lot of shows people recommend and we actually ended up watching.
And there’s no wrong answer here.
That’s one point.
The second point is more about how I choose reactions in general.
Every so often, someone asks if we’re going to react to a certain anime, K-drama, Western show, movie, etc.
And the honest answer is: I don’t always know.
We have limited slots.
And we don’t only react to one type of thing. We react to anime, K-dramas, Western live action, movies, cartoons, music, and whatever else the audience is actually showing up for.
So the reaction schedule is not really my personal watchlist.
Reaction content = what the community wants to watch the most.
Idle time = whatever I feel like watching lol.
And even then, I barely choose because my wife picks a lot of what we watch at home too.
But that’s honestly how I am.
If I’m watching TV with the family, I don’t need everything to be my personal first choice. If they’re happy and the show is good quality, I can usually enjoy myself.
The same logic extends to the channel.
When I’m recording reactions, I’m thinking about what satisfies the most subscribers, what gives the community the most value, and what makes sense for the channel.
That doesn’t mean my taste doesn’t matter.
It just means my personal taste is not the only thing driving the schedule.
So yeah, I think that tells you a lot about me.
I’m really going with the flow as long as the people around me are satisfied, the content is good, and the community is getting something they actually want.
That includes y’all too.
So I’m asking seriously:
Why do you think these anime don’t get suggested more?
Is it because people don’t know them?
Because the fanbase is quiet?
Because they look less hype from the outside?
Because people don’t like rewatching something they already saw?
Or do people just think they’re good, but not reaction-priority good?
I’m curious.

If you like Ancient Magus Bride, you might like Mushishi. Slow but very good story, not sure how it would go reaction wise.
I've watched and it was pretty good, although i don't think it's an anime that i would like to see in a reaction...
idk bro I just be watching what yall be putting out
I've only seen The ancient Magnus bride out of these 2. But I'd say it's bc it always gets overlooked. It's an anime that u really enjoy or even love but most won't rewatch, it's not extremely popular either. So the top seasonal shows or shounen or isekai etc etc will always get recommended first. I put something like Psycho Pass in the same boat and I was one of the ppl begging y'all to watch it for years before y'all eventually got around to it lol.
To give you a serious answer, I can speak for myself and say that at some point, the barrier to recommending something stopped me from actually bringing something up. I remember a while back you had asked folks to make recommendations with data to back it up. That's a very fair thing to ask for honestly. But for me, it was like, "ok, what does that look like then?" Is it data from other reaction channels? View? Comments? But these accumulate over time, so what's the timeframe? T + 3 days? 7 days? Or do I look for manga sales? It's not like this data is impossible to collect by the way, but at some point I decided that was too much work, and I watch almost everything you post anyway (in the anime space), so I naturally just settled into a pattern of kicking back and watching whatever comes along, instead of actively requesting certain shows. That said, if you post a vote with options, I always participate in those.
You seem to be more focused on recent stuff. Older stuff had been mentioned in the past but doesnt seem to get much traction. But if we're gonna do this, Evangelion is right there lol
I’ve recommended Magnus on more than one occasion as it is such a great show. However it gets drowned out for the new shows or shows that debut within the last two years. Which is sad, because there are a lot of great shows are being overlooked because they are not newer. This goes for all categories not just anime.
if this mean Ancient Magus Bride not going to become a reaction im a little sad i dont get to see it but am happy that it is getting seen as it never makes it when its on a vote list from all the channels ive seen it on
As someone who did suggest it, it's a great show but I feel like too many people have this perspective of "it wouldn't get reactions or views" so these type of shows that have heavy stories like magus bride get pushed out because of degen/shounen/rom-com/isekai shows. I watch these type of shows but I also don't only watch these type of shows. I can watch just about anything. It does suck that shows like this just don't survive in the polls. Glad you checked it out though and liked it!
I use to suggestion The Ancient Magus' Bride in the past but when you ask for suggestions from the community in a post other anime beat it in polls like others have said. And the chat room for suggestions has that 2022+ limit so we can't even recommend The Ancient Magus' Bride (2017) and other anime like it there.
Yeah, the chat room suggestions is strictly so I don’t miss out on any potential heat Without having a year 2023, they’ll flood it with a whole bunch of suggestions And when that happens, nothing stands out and the chat room will become useless If you think about it , you have a high rate of your suggestions being accepted because you’re not competing with too many suggestions in the chat room I see like five a week because of criteria so strict, so I can literally see it all and keep up with it And I have the opportunity to respond back I think you already know this, but I’m writing this for anyone who might read
We suggest a lot on Discord, but you reply is "I don't take suggestions in this format" :D
I think some of these animes don't get suggested because we're unsure if others will want to watch the reactions as well. Especially if its an older show. Even when the suggestions are made at the time they can get lost in the sea of comments. But it could also be a quieter fan base as well.
Opportunity Cost. It's because there's other old shows we are still waiting for instead!
shows like this wont win a vote because theyre not as popular, many people wont know or have watched them. theyll also get buried in suggestions or people wont recommend them because the wont do good "numbers" so we feel its not worth even suggesting. also, theres a TON of shows that dont make it to the top of ranking sites or that dont have great "MAL scores" but are really good in their own right, they just are a bit niche or are competing with some top dawg release season and dont get any traction, but there is quality there. also older shows sometimes wont get recommended because its not at the top of peoples minds.
Bride is good and all but This Show was a One time watch only for me that's why. Real Good but can't watch it multiple times actually I would go as far as saying some show are not "good" for reaction as they get no "reactions". Like it's magnificent the world building is good the story is good but they are no INSANE moment where I'm like I 100% have to see the reaction of Lee on this one.
Makes perfect sense
I’ve seen a bit of ancient magnus bride and agree it’s got higher quality. I try to keep older show recommendations to when you have the elite sanin suggestions. Not trying to overwhelm with the many many anime that have come out before you started reacting lol
Yeah. To be real. I’m pretty much thinking of the Elite Sannin people. I know I gotta get the hype shows for growth. But it would be nice to get high quality shows that don’t rely on hype and strong emotions. Just great story. You can sit back, dissect and review
Magus Bride is good. I liked it anyway lol. Need to finish season 2 & watch the one or two movies or ova’s. I’ve only seen one or two episodes of virgin witch. So if you guys watch it, I watch it with you guys 😊
With reaction content there's a massive amount of recency bias, people naturally are watching stuff as it airs and so it's on their mind and they're looking for reactions so that's where the numbers are - and ultimately you run a business dependent on those numbers. Lots of older shows have the potential for the numbers of newer shows but their fans aren't looking for reactions, because they don't expect any, or it's just not on their mind - you can love a film from the 80s but you won't be thinking about it everyday, but you'll think about Invincible when a season drops. This is a more niche example but I love an anime from 2004 called the tatami galaxy but I've never pushed for a reaction or actively looked for reactions to it because I don't expect them to exist lol, so there's a bit of a feedback loop with it. Niche shows are even harder because even if you suggest it the numbers just aren't there objectively (it's why they're niche) so people give up or don't bother suggesting it. Maybe if there were more polls only for older/niche shows for you to get suggested the gems of the past or overlooked shows, not necessarily to guarantee a spot on the schedule but to gauge interest without putting them up against shows more likely to win. Some kind of system for ranked choice voting over just Patreon polls where you pick one option or a bunch of equal weighted options could be good. You could arguably separate popular but older shows and just completely niche shows, as you may be able to draw a lot of those fans out and get solid numbers you just can't with niche shows - look at fullmetal alchemist them lot still haven't moved on lmao
i find both the shows bad, and also boring reaction content.
Ye both are pretty solid shows. your wife has good taste
I pretty much gave up recommending those type of series to you guys unless their currently airing their first season.
They’re good for people who like anime in general, not people who always want fighting and action shounen slop in every seasonal anime. The fanbase is definitely there. I’ve attended most anime events and conventions, and most of the time, I see cosplays of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. The majority of the fanbase you’re looking for doesn’t watch reaction videos. They watch and enjoy the anime on their own, attend events, cosplay, and buy official merchandise.
That’s good insight. A large portion who like this story telling are not even watching reactions lol. Like my wife lol. She naturally likes those shows would never watch a reaction video
It really comes down to the fact that your fan base simply won't vote for these shows even if they're good. Which a lot of people know that so they don't even bother trying to recommend it. Mushishi, Natsune book of friends shows like these you will probably never get to watch if you do community voting, even though hey're absolutely fantastic shows. If you have free time I suggest trying to watch them.
These are great shows, and the actual answer to your question is that I think a lot of your fanbase probably have just never heard of them or simply wouldn't think to watch them, genre-wise. That, and they're both older* shows. *Calling them old is making me feel like I'm going to turn to dust. There are an infinite number of excellent shows that don't get watched by the average viewer who might favor action shows like JJK etc. It's just not on their radar, sadly.
I feel that's there is so many shows that's its hard to reccomend more niche anime. I watched only the first 5 episodes of Ancient Magnus Bride when I first got into anime because I really wasn't sure what I personally enjoyed. (That was like almost 10 years ago so my tastes are way better) I love anime like Re:Creators and Fruits Basket. I tend to want to reccomend these shows, but I feel the fanbase backing those up are smaller, so it usually get drowned out by shows. I think its mainly a combination of the fanbase being quiet and people might not know them. I did not hear about Maria until this post. I might be wrong, but that's just how I see it.
I love The Ancient Magus Bride. It was drawn and written by Kore Yamazaki, a female (as far as I can tell). The mangaka likes dogs and cats. I give her a pass on the first episode, but I'm sure many folks were turned off at the thought of a 15-year-old girl selling herself at auction, only to be bought by a monster who stripped and bathed her as soon as he got her home. There was talk of grooming and bestiality. I just figured if a female created it, a male should not complain. This anime makes some people sad. I am pretty sure I saw one female reactor wonder why she was tearing up. That reactor never covered AMB again! Also, there is not much action, though when it happens, it is good. Finally, the second season was too slow even for hardcore fans. I have not given it up. Yamazaki helped produce the second season herself, so she might do it again for a third season, and I will watch it.
Yeah, become desensitized watching it in a anime, but the age part was bothering me. My wife has watched a couple episodes without me so I actually didn’t know how old she was. They just kept calling her a kid. 15 sounds better than what I was thinking. Thank you you
Ancient Magus Bride is really good. I've watched all of it. Honestly, I just don't think it would hit with your channel. Your folks want mostly shounen or degen shows from you and those always win the polls. And that kind of stuff does seem to cater to your strengths as a reactor. I'm happy to recommend you more though provoking shows but you want views and I'm not sure you'll get them (for example, I recently pushed for Jaadugar --- great show but not a top performer by most metrics).
Yeah, 100% correct in your analysis
As someone who has recommended "Ancient Magus' Bride" on many patreon channels in the past. I kind of just gave up after a while. It is always drowned out by something else. Unless they are actively looking for something like it, most channels won't even notice the the recommendation next to the 20X number of Isekai/shounen recommendations. It's unfortunate, because it's an amazing show.
I agree, that’s why I took the time to highlight it I was surprised by how immersed I was in the story
Wow it's feels like ages since I have seen someone mention Maria
I recall the Magus Bride being older and iirc older anime had less chance for a reaction. I cant speak about the other since I hadn't watched it.
True
