Really interesting topic. And i wish you actually watched Fate series at least some parts of it cuz it handles Evil in really interesting ways.It has my all time favorite villain, Kotomine Kirei. I love this topic in general and i love interesting Evil villains that are complex and deep and i love how deep you got into this rabbit hole thanks to Takopi.
I watched Fate series. I just don’t talk about it
Since you're still curious on the topic, I'll jump in with my opinion. I'm part of the group that believes the kids in Takopi are not evil, but this is because I believe there is no use in trying to figure out if a person is good or evil. What matters to me is their actions only, and I think that all people are equally capable of committing both good and evil. Our justice systems functions the same way; we try people based on their actions, not their personality or their moral alignment. This way we don't risk letting "good" people off easy for evil actions, and we don't dismiss "evil" people trying to do good. Society has a different ways to handle punishment based on age as well, since young children will clearly not understand that what they did was evil, or what that even means. So you send the kids to juvenile detention and rehab, and the adults to prison. It's all based on the laws we've put in place to enforce our society's definitions of good and evil. And yes, other countries have different laws, so their definitions of what counts as evil are different, even if they speak English. That's what I think.
Pretty much. A person's actions being evil or not is one thing. In that case Kids in Takopi did many evil actions and were "Evil at times". I think thats the main disagreement. Lee looks at the dictionary and calls something evil if it fits the definition at any time, Most other people consider the word fitting only when it apply in a longer period of time. Honestly both interpretations are correct. People being psychopaths or sociopaths due to part of their brains being broken is a whole another thing and i do not think that applies to them. A person or kid CAN be evil by nature. But you do not need to be evil to do evil acts.
I watched this harvard course on ethics years ago, check it out. You don't have to watch every episode just watch the first one. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL30C13C91CFFEFEA6
@7:03 the abortion question is interesting, and even pro-life people intuitively understand that live children are different than embryos. I saw a clip where someone at an anti-abortion rally asked the people there: if they were in a burning building, would they save one newborn or one hundred embryos? And every one of them said they’d save the newborn. If they thought embryos were actually people, surely saving 100 people would be better than saving one. That really reframed the discussion for me.
Daaaaamnn. Those are the types of questions that people don’t really think about and when you hear it for the first time you have to step back and then reevaluate everything you think you believe.
Interesting topic. Right from the beginning we can have a discussion. Dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive. How people actually use language is what matters, and dictionaries just try to capture this. They're not authorities, which is why they're constantly changing. Take the word 'literally' for example. The informal use of the word to express emphasis was added to the dictionary because that's how people have evolved the use of the word.
