Patreon Growth and Map Changes

Hey everyone, there are going to be some changes happening this month to what content I'm creating. Over the last year we've really struggled with Patreon growth and topped out at around 700 patrons on average down from over 800 from last year.

One of the big changes we made back then was going down to 2 from the 3-4 map packs we originally provided. This was in theory meant to give me more time to work on other projects which have been in the works but as the saying goes, work fills the time given to it and instead I ended up just focusing on making the 2 releases we did into larger and more complex maps.

Unfortunately it seems this strategy hasn't really worked to well based on the direct feedback of our Patreon growth so I want to make some changes to see if we can get growing again.

The first change that will be taking effect this month is we'll be going back up to 3 map pack releases per month. Unfortunately, one downside of that is we'll be cutting the amount of adventures. We'll still be providing 1 adventure for the featured map and continue releasing new adventures for the $7 tier Adventurer Guides but otherwise all other variants will no longer be receiving adventures.

The reason for this is I just don't have the time to both increase the amount of map packs released and then do additional adventures for them. Due to falling revenue we also don't really have the funds to continue hiring on our writer to do additional adventures either.

In addition to more map packs per month another thing I've been considering for the future is increasing the amount of variants, offered. Since we'll no longer be providing 1 adventure per variant it means I can much more easily release more variant maps without massively increasing the work load.

I've often heard you guys saying that a particular map would be great if only it had a slightly different setting, such as spelljammer, underwater, hells etc. So let me know in the comments if more variants is something you'd be interested in, for instance I could release 14 variants per map pack, 7 for the $3 tier and maybe another 7 for the $7 tier due to the extra work required.

Another avenue to explore would be modular map sets + Mega maps. I have, as some of you might know been working on some modular stuff in my free time behind the scenes for what seems like eternity now. >.< But If it's something you guys are interested in I could instead of doing a regular 3rd map pack release per month do a modular map pack release + some Mega dungeons made from them.

What that might look like is:

x5 10x10 modular maps + 1 or more additional variant for each map for a total of 10+ maps.

x2 30x20 modular map + 1 or more additional variant each for a total of 4+ maps

or instead x1 40x30 modular map + 1 or more additional variant each for a total of 2+ maps.

In additional I'd like to put them together modular sets to make mega maps. Something like a 80x80 map or 100x100, not 100% sure how big a lot of VTT will allow you to go without crashing or slowing down to much but big is fun!

In the end the goal of the modular map sets would be to have many distinct biomes, such as forest, cavern, city, village, swamp etc. that are all able to be connected to make massive scenes.

The downside of the modular maps is they probably wouldn't be done in foundry so those of you who use foundry may miss out on that or have to do that yourself.

Anyways I'd really love to hear what you guys think, what feedback you may have or ideas for the Patreon. I can't promise I'll implement anything but It's really helpful to see what you guys would like to see more of. :)

Thanks so much,

Luke

P.S I appreciate everyone who is or has in the past supported me and for those willing to support a 3rd map pack release per month I <3 you. But if you don't have the funds for that don't worry it's still all good and I still appreciate the support! You can adjust how many map packs you support in the options menu just changing it to a max of 2 so you're not charged for the new 3rd map pack. :)

Im also a home brewer, so I will never use any of your adventures at all. What I do think is, that your maps increasingly are becoming more and more ‘special’ and for my account rather difficult to use. Maps with many exits fx leaves it a headache to use for whatabout the parts that all the exits leads to? Make the maps more ‘realistic’ as to remember social parts in rooms fx toilets, kitchen etc when you make a ‘base’ og stronghold. Several maps also show a little part of a much bigger place, which I also think is rather difficult to use - how will the party enter the place or exit if I don’t have maps leading to the place and out? I would also LOVE TO THE DEATH, if your maps were gridded aka Heroic Maps does it. Black thin lines that doesn’t steal the many cool details on the map or the whole impression would be much appreciated. Focus on the userfriendliness and ‘realistic’ settings :-).

I have to strongly disagree with adding in black gridlines as that is something that anybody could add on a VTT (like Roll20) or add in photoshop, but it isn't something I could take off.

I'm a totally homebrew DM so I've never used any of the provided adventure hooks. They seemed nice but I won't miss them. What I AM a big fan of is variants. Your maps have been so useful to me because of the variations in each pack. My needs tend to be really specific but I often find what I want in your alternate options. Some map & variant types I'd love to see more of: gothic; ruined/damaged/overgrown versions; large/giant scale environments; desert/arctic; palatial/high elven. FWIW, some variants are rarely useful to me, though: void, underwater, and airship/spelljammer stuff. I'll also throw in a vote for modular packs—I *love* big connected environments. And, as Vector169 said above, some really unique, cinematic locales would be great. A memorable one from your back catalog was "The Prismatic Blade". My party had an standout BBEG fight and story event on that one, punctuated by me shifting the map to the "Deaths Gate" variant. The reaction from the players was exactly what I was looking for, and they still talk about that scene two years later. (So I guess void maps come in handy, afterall...)

I did not really use the adventures so more maps are the better deal for me. Modular Maps are always great and useful, especially geomorphic maps which can be combined in any direction. It would be great if there would also be additional crossover-border-tiles to combine the different biomes which would multiply the options.

I love what you have been putting out lately. I do not use many of the written adventures as I homebrew my stuff so much that my story needs to go its own way. But I use your maps all the time. Especially the space ones for my Spelljammer campaign. More space variants would be awesome. As would tokens of your ships.

I've been a patron for the past 2 years because of the cozy visual content! Can't say I find the adventure content that appealing, and if it's taking time and resources away from the maps, I don't think anyone would mind if it was scrapped.

We should all spread the world about this content creator! His work is sick! Everyone should be using these assets; they're amazing!

First off your maps are great, so glad you are still continuing them, many thanks! My requirements are probably niche, in that I print out and laminate your maps - so megamaps and modular maps would be awesome. I also agree with previous comments about multilevel maps. I am running a Lankhmar campaign, and the cluttered, crushed in houses of up to 6 storey high tenements with balconies, stairs, and roof bridges are nowhere to be found on Patreon so I have to use yours and others maps - put them into GIMP and create my own versions. Or, print out your maps, and cut pieces out to use. I have no interest in VTT, and dropped the adventure level as tbh I found the adventures to be too boring, basically monster of the week - go here and kill it. AFAIC people should be writing adventures to fit your maps not the other way around. That's how I write mine! Anyways, keep up the good work and good luck with your business strategy :)

I'm here for the maps - so the adventure supplements don't hold any interest for me. I find the variants in different settings or biomes to be helpful. I also in favor of fewer, larger maps - with some variation to include ones for non-dungeon settings - meaning larger encounter areas in outdoor, unbounded environments.

First off, I love your maps, so I will take whatever comes my way. Modular maps would suit my group's playstyle very well. They are the kind of players who explore EVERY bush, tree or rock to find ALL the secrets, so larger maps (or the option to tack on another area) would be very much appreciated.

Modular good, assets good, different sizes good. YOU are the creator. We love your maps or else we wouldn't be subscribed! I don't use foundry so can't speak for those of that ilk, but honestly having new maps to throw at my players each week is an absolute godsend! And I have enough from you to run several campaigns! But I'm here for more, always more, in whichever way they come, I sub here for more maps. I love your style and the substance that comes with and will continue to sub until there are no more maps.

I love all of your map variants, but I'd also love to have more modular map sets, even if they spanned multiple months. If that means I need to up my subscription to the next tier, then so be it. I'd say do whatever works best to keep things moving, and I'll keep enjoying your content.

V
Vector169 · September 16, 2023

And yes, map assets. Maybe once very quarter instead of getting a map, get 20-30 assets to decorate maps with.

V
Vector169 · September 16, 2023

In all honesty, more variants doesn't mean anything to me. You are one of 3 map makers I support, and have for years. I have hundreds and hundreds of maps in my catalog. And, in all honesty, I'm getting ready to drop some subscriptions, just haven't decided who. Everybody is making all the same stuff. Dungeon crawls, and caves, and what not. I could never use all the maps I have, adding more of the same theme doesn't help. Now, what I could use, are unique locations, and multi-leval grand maps. I know it sounds weird, but what I could use is the hippodrome training yard. And the roman apathete. And the active volcano with the virgin sacrifice platform with the trail up to it and the stands for the reverent to watch so the heroes can stop the sacrifice. So, basically saying, either larger more immersive maps, even if the levels are created over a few months, or more unique locations. But more of the same isn't working for me.

Honestly, I'd be fine with fewer variants, but for the variants some less frequently found themes, like deserts, arctic, etc. I like the idea of modular maps, but even more than that would be map assets I could use (e.g. set decorations like treasure chests, tables, beds, etc) to populate maps that aren't completely decorated. I'd love to have bare bones maps that I could decorate to fit my needs. Even better would be decorations in different states (some opulent, some opulent that are in a state of decay, etc). Edit: For the modular stuff, it would also be kind of cool if they were geomorphic so we could create random type dungeons, rather than just huge ones that you built... I hope that makes sense, if not, let me know and I can try and give you an example.

I agree that it would be nice to have assets to decorate maps with. Being able to show the same place through change really adds to storytelling. Players released a demon? Well, that town is now dead and ripped apart, good job guys! I love Seafoot maps because they have locations, the places in the maps feel like places and I can build my own story around them. Most people are doing the same old thing but yours feel like places that are found. I only use snow, indoor, and underground maps so I'm biased there. The ease of things being prepared in foundry is a big draw, modular maps or things I have to work on for prep wouldn't get a whole lot of use for me anyway. If I was able to use a manifest download link that would be great, I often download the zip and forget to unzip it and then go hunting to figure out my mistake. I think there are some people that don't know that they can be installed without a manifest link too, that might help attract some people. If the foundry packs also had the entire release with all of the variants in it that would be super helpful as it can be hard to find what I'm looking for when they're named individually. Moulinette is a pretty big draw too, I don't sub to new people unless they are on Moulinette anymore honestly

I'd Love having more variants, which is something that Made me not use some of your maps. I mean some desert, underwater, fire and oriental variants. For a bunch of maps you released I used these variants instead of the main map
