Done.
Kind of can’t really explain the degree of dread and fury it inspires to have watched the far right use campus free speech as a Trojan Horse for spreading hate for years, to now see people start saying, “Campus free speech has gone too far,” because far right fuckwits are very into suppressing speech. The “vurrrry serious, realistic, and legitimate” brain trust in this country refuses to acknowledge they’ve been being pulled around by their very serious dicks for at least a decade.
Nazis having a torch march, beating students and faculty, while shouting “Jews will not replace us,” before spending a day committing wanton violence while cops stood around watching, and going on to commit a murder was “both sides.”
It’s apparently too much to ask to slow down and think for ten fucking seconds about what it means to have a fascist movement at play in your political landscape, and act with something resembling forethought.
These people do not give a single fuck about Jews or Israel. They see it as a good opportunity to help instigate Jews and Muslims killing each other, which means they have to expend less effort to achieve their goals. If you think they’re “allies of convenience,” you are dead fucking wrong and being manipulated for that purpose. The second they get the chance, the best outcome for American Jews will be forced migration. That’s the “compassionate fascism.” They will use EVERY argument currently being used against Palestinians and activists sympathetic to Palestinians, against American Jews. At best, they’ll use them to expel Jews from the US. We’ve seen what the worst possibilities are, and if you think for one second the “send them to Israel” Nazis won’t shrug and go about their day if the worst impulses win out, you’re deluded. You have peoole who have been spreading Great Replacement Theory leading this current charge, and that somehow doesn’t have weight. “Jews will not replace us,” is the chant of Great Replacement.
With an election not far in the future, a candidate who could very well win openly declaring his fascist dictatorial intent, we’re just shrugging and saying, “Well, these are our fascists at least,” and just handing them influence and power.
You know who was responsible for insuring prosecutions of the fascists at Unite the Right? The activists opposing fascism. It WAS NOT VIrginia prosecutors or police. They dragged their feet and did fuck all, until those activists made their evidence public, forcing VA’s law enforcement and prosecutors to take action, because contuining to do nothing would have even more plainly highlighted how useless they are in their white supremacist perspective and leanings, had they not acted on that evidence. With the power of the state, the power of the search warrant, the power of the subpeona and the arrest warrant, they couldn’t achieve what a bunch of part time sleuths using their personal laptops and desktops achieved? And that lack of action was given cover by all the “both sides” bullshit.
We still have a CONSIDERABLE number of people with power and influence pushing the idea that Jan 6 was not an attempt to overthrow the results of the election.
A lot of us tried to tell anyone who would listen that something like Unite the Right was going to happen if we didn’t collectively take seriously the rise of the fascist movement. We tried to tell people that Unite the Right was going to be exactly what it ended up being. After Unite the Right, it was, “How could we have known?”
Then, we saw EXACTLY THE SAME THING ON JAN 6. They openly planned and openly outlined their intent, the activists dedicated to monitoring them said, “This is a problem,” and everyone else said, “They don’t actually mean it.”
I’m going to say it for the last time, the consequences of continuing to not interrogate the way we let far right actors and their ideology infiltrate power and manipulate whatever the “big issue” of the current moment is, are going to have catastrophic consequences. Dismiss me because I was traumatized by seeing a Nazi murder someone, while attempting to murder as many people as he could. Don’t come crying to me when fascist violence comes to your neighborhood. I’m done. I’m going to write my little books, write about horror, and you all are going to do what you are or aren’t going to do. It’s plainly obvious I can do nothing about any of it, and very few people are considering and taking seriously how bad the consequences actually can be.
Unite the Right and Jan 6 are the world they want, and that’s what most people fail to fully grasp. The belief that the state will never let that happen is directly contradicted by the evidence of the last decade. The state is both sympathetic to white supremacy, which makes it incapable of fully defending against this fascist movement, and no shortage of its agents are not just sympathetic, but fully supportive.
