Revisiting Past Favorites

Recently pulled out my stand alone hard drive to dig up some songs for someone. It inspired me to start going back and listening to some of the music I listened to often in the past to see how much of it holds up today.

The most genuinely surprising has been Sparkle and Fade by Everclear. The songwriting is stronger than I would have given it credit for and overall. It’s a pretty adult record thematically. Sonically, it’s an interesting meeting point of grunge, punk and 80’s alternative. It also has an appreciation for simple, catchy choruses and hooks. I remember really liking it when it was released, and listening to it for a while, but it’s a much better record than I remembered, although their output was much more pop inspired after it, and none of it was very interesting to me. If someone asked me about it prior to revisiting it, I wouldn’t have been as kind about it as it deserves.
