Why did I think it was a good idea to eat my breakfast while watching this. This episode never gets any easier.
This episode in particular makes me think of the abyss as an angler fish, using mystery and wonder to lure willing prey down its throat. So far the abyss has been a place to explore and journey through, but as soon as the prey crosses the point of no return the jaws snap shut and we get this episode.

When I first watched this, I had to pause the video like 2 or 3 times and just kind of pace around. I don't think any other piece media has made me do that.
I hear you, Made in Abyss was the first anime that made me order the manga so I could continue the story after the first season dropped. The fact that it gets so much worse while you never get desensitized to it and it never feels gratuitous is frankly amazing writing. It's a superb piece of media, not necessarily a pleasant one, but deeply moving. It's what truly "adult" anime should be, not ecchi, but emotionally complicated. It makes you feel things, even if they aren't always things you like.
