What a sane and respectable lady Ozen is, though I am sure the rest of the white whistles are just as reasonable as her and there is nothing to worry about :clueless:

Hate to say it, but Ozen was the necessary cruelty we needed, it's like a slap to the face saying "Hey, this isn't a walk through a park, it's a place where life can be threatened every time". So even if it was too much, it'll never be enough, because a dark and disturbing advise it's better than lose your life, it hasn't been like that during these episodes, but from now on it may be.

I tried to write this on Youtube but for some reason it couldn't post, so I'll do it here

YUP. Welcome to Childhood Trauma in Abyss… I mean Made in Abyss.

in my opinion, this is the worst episode of the anime adaptation-wise, the Ozen fight just feels horribly dragged down by constant dialogue

I really liked all the dialog honestly. I didn't read the manga due to some of the imagery but I quite liked the way this episode handled itself

A "fun" way to look at the abyss from MiA is as a metaphor for capitalism, I find a lot of parallels you can make to a great number of things in the series through this lens. In this episode nothing shines as bright an example to me as the part where Ozen says that the ability to reach the bottom of the abyss and return easily/safely simply must not exist because it would completely undercut the entire existence of the societal structure of Orth. In a similar manner nothing is more terrifying to capitalists than the idea that a system could be constructed in which every person could revel in plenty and safety without a lifetime of labor which will sap their sanity and health. In this metaphor then Ozen is the good intentioned boomer in education putting her students through grueling and emotionally abusive tests where they have to abandon sleep and their health to keep up, but justifies it because "That's how the real world is".

The metaphor here is spelled plainly: The Abyss is God. The Abyss is absolute. Aubade are forbidden because they overpower God, and overthrow the absolute. I guess you could stuff a metaphor for commie stuff in there... or whatever religion you like.

I love Ozen for a lot of the reasons you hate her. As a real person Ozen would be awful, I totally agree. But I love Ozen as a character because she is an expression of what decades of trauma can turn a person into, and while my decades of trauma haven't turned me into her, the world of Made In Abyss would not have felt real to me if those who had spent the most time in the abyss were not terribly socially twisted by it. If anything I feel like the good natured band of raiders that work for her feel out of place for this world by comparison.

^ exactly my thoughts, her being this way makes her likable to me. If a veteran in challenging this insanely brutal world was a super caring, kind, loving person with the kid's best interests in mind to me it would seem really out of place and make me suspect them even more. Generally in stories I enjoy seeing how insane worlds create insane personalities and perspectives on life in adult characters... them being unlikable and cruel by our standards just makes me more interested in them
