Persobally to me, I think there's a clear allegory with evil eye for those types of traumatised problematic children who are destructive in nature, be it to themselves or those around them. But it comes from a lifetime of bad parenting, abuse or unfortunate surrounding, with their lashing out actually being the only way they know how to express their pain and ask for help and healing them really takes an effort that consumes your entire life, but the alternative is giving up on them and abandoning the child to continue on their path of self destruction. Jiji is making the self sacrifice of risking himself and others he care about, in order to give a chance to this child. I think you and the other commenters are right in which it is selfish, but it is also admirable and noble. Because if not him, who? A poignant reflection on reality once again.
