I sure the guy smiles in his last moments because he accepted death as his deserved punishment. And story of the couple is pretty tragic. These two women probably just wanted to live in the community safe from predatory men (like the thugs from first episode), but ended up in a cult practicing sex slavery, mutilation, and murder of dissenters. Although it makes me wonder if the mother's powers awakened only after her death, since she wasn't able to protect herself?
