L'histoire de Melody McClurg

For this week's bonus, it's full-court press of useless tech: reactionaries' trying and failing to turn Elon Musk's ultra gen X large language model transphobic; Wes Streeting getting dazzled by an app in Singapore, and a surveillance tech company riding the wave of teen vape interdiction and kicking people out of public housing. The name of the podcast isn't ironic.

Hapsburg AI is a good descriptor. Digital Prion Disease is another fun one (that l... might have gotten from TF? Feels like something they'd say, but also like something l could come up with on my own)

I use Verkada at work. The site I'm at is upgrading the cameras to use Verkada. I can tell you from personal experience that the "AI" sucks ass. It's pretty good at detecting if a human is in frame. But it has a high false positive rate. There's one dead branch it constantly thinks is a person. It keeps seeing people in walls, stains on the pavement, bushes & trees, and even in rain. It also just cannot do facial recognition. To start with, there's the basic techno-racism of not being able to detect that dark skinned people even have faces. It's also pretty terrible at telling white people apart (who isn't?). The last time I used it to try and track a guy's movements around site, it showed me clips of four people. Tbf, one of the persons was the guy I was looking for. The other three were women. It simply can't tell two vehicles apart. It also uses an algorithm to down-res videos it stores. It's supposed to keep any motion it perceives as high res, but it's shit at that. I also forsee problems with the admissibility of the video as evidence in court as the only saved copy has admittedly been altered. They require you to lease cameras from Verkada. Those cameras are also not great. Middling resolutions, easily saturated sensors, and no PTZ function. You also have to access the feeds through a web browser that offers shit video acceleration.

Private insurance in the US has a system in the vein of the "give you tickets for going on a walk". It's America so it's more confusing and useless: you have to sign up for a separate program in your insurance (this is not automatic despite it being through your insurance company). After you do some activities - get the flu shot, a gym membership, etc - and submit paperwork for it, they will send you a debit card in 6-8 weeks (maybe). Can you use the debit card for things? No, fuck off. You can use it for dental and vision copays only unless you hit your deductible for the year which is a shit show by itself. So yeah, look forward to seeing the UK version of that.

I think in addition to a lot of money for the Singapore health system, you also shouldn't discount the amount of slave I mean guest labour that goes into it.

When Stubenville Ohio came up for some reason I found it oddly familiar as a name. Turns out a girl in high school was incapacitated by alcohol and r*ped by her peers while they recorded it and shared it amongst each other. It became high profile because 2 of the defendants were in the high school football team. What a fuckin awful place https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steubenville_High_School_rape_case

I feel that saying Elon Musk made/designed (insert thing here) perpetuates a more competent idea of him than the more honest description: Musk paid people to make (whatever garbage he takes credit for)

This town building motherfucker is literally going out there trying to sell this idea like he's Daniel Plainview. Just has to go up onto a theatre stage and do a dramatic monologue, thinks everyone is just gonna roll over for him. And he's convinced it's gonna work as easily as it did in the film.

The apprenticeship system in England is such a bin fire of reform, grifts, government incompetence & waste of apprentices time and effort that it would make a great episode in itself

I live in NYC, AKA dilapidated Singapore, and they have touchscreen kiosks in at least some of the doctors’ offices I go to. The touchscreen kiosks are only used for checking in for appointments, though, which is to say the touchscreen kiosks are only used for the sorts of forms that used to be on a clipboard that they handed you to fill out. I assume not having to transcribe people’s shitty handwriting does, in fact, make the system more efficient. And even then, the touchscreen kiosks are just frontends for the massive integrated IT systems, and you can do exactly the same thing filling out forms in an app on your phone, if you want. One funny thing is that the three main nonprofit health systems I’ve interacted with (i.e. not the municipal health system) all use the same software vendor, though they each have their own slightly rebranded app. (It’s easy to have medical records shared on the backend, though.) The main exception to all this is the handful of times I’ve gone to for-profit convenience urgent-care clinics, which use weird IT systems that don’t integrate with anything. (I’ve never used the municipal health system. I don’t know how it works with medical insurance, even Medicaid, which I have.) Anyway all this is to say that if the NHS wants a modernized IT system designed to be interoperable between smaller independent healthcare systems, it took like twenty years, but we do, in fact, have that in the US. And, more importantly: again, the touchscreen kiosks are just the tip of the iceberg of the massive integrated IT system, one that took decades to roll out. I have no idea what vendor or vendors the UK has in mind, though.

E
Elsie Hupp · December 15, 2023

Oh apparently there was a pilot project from the vendor in the UK in 2014, which was a disaster (no, I don’t know why it works in the US and not the UK): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Systems They do apparently have an office in Singapore, but I don’t know it they’re the main medical IT vendor there.

This may sound ignorant of me, but the teaching apprenticeship doesn't sound like a terrible idea in theory. I think primary and secondary education could benefit by allowing people who have a passion for teaching but perform poorly in a university environment a spot in education. Obviously it is all about how it is implemented, but I think more apprenticeships for jobs that are usually reserved for people who have a four year degree is a good thing.

My kids school seemed to be doing this already somehow. I don’t know how it was legal but they got a kid who did well at science a level to go back the next year teaching gcse. Apparently he wasn’t “taking” the class because he was being loosely supervised by a qualified teacher who was generally somewhere else. I met him at parents evening as my kids “teacher” tho.
