Dial M for Musk ft. Paris Marx

Paris Marx of Tech Won't Save Us joins the gang to delve into the past of Elon Musk to explain his present day fascinations and oddities. We all know about the Emerald Mine, but how many of us know about the staircase kicking, or the baffling chiropractic grandfather?

Others have commented, but the frustrating thing is Musk *is* into Iain M. Banks, or at least he's referenced The Culture series a number of times, including in an interview about AI where he talked about in the future, machines doing all the work and humans having to try to find meaning outside that. He's just somehow managed to not absorb a single moral or theme from Banks, cause he seems to think (or at least say) if we make this fantastical AI like in the books, then we'll have a utopia like in the books. But even in the books, there are other societies with all the same tech, yet they're total dystopias. The explicitly stated point is that the utopia has always been possible, choosing radically egalitarian, universally transgender and polyamorous, unrestrainedly compassionate anarcho-communism is what came FIRST, then the shiny toys came after. Yet all of that, and the fact that every character from the Culture would variously despise him as a billionaire, seems to go right over Musk's head

diving into the mentions to protect Douglas Adams from Paris’s strays - that may be what Foundation is about, but it’s not Hitchhikers! Retract the disinformation u cowards!

Douglas Adams is given proper respect on Paris' Elon series with the interview guest iirc. Still, there is a kinda deeply unmoored snarky tone to HHGttG of "whatever, man", "it's all laughs and absurdity" that lends itself to becoming the territory of libertarians and associated types, I think. Tho I did and in parts still do love the radio series, haven't listened in a while; and outside HHGttG, Adams also had a more serious while still humorous side, like in the talk "Last Chance to See" about lemurs on Madagascar, dolphins in Chinese rivers going "blind" cause of noise pollution, and humans in the driver's seat with all this.

Using Twitter in 2011/12 was fun, using it in 2023 means you're deeply diseased.

R

Yes, guess I am, but I'm late to the party as semi active user, and I still like it broadly for some ideas, comments on current events and history, and media, article, report links from people in specific fields. And as a kinda news feed, if curated tightly.

Part of the reason I think Musk seems immune from JP Morgan Chase ninjas is how MUCH big democrats invested in Elon in the Obama era and now they have a serious sunk cost going on. Like the instant you can’t ignore how badly Tesla is doing anymore the DOT is going to require all new government cars be bought from Tesla because of carbon or something

And SpaceX, Starlink etc is kinda part of Pentagon/military now

e
etienne · December 6, 2023

specifically he thinks that AI will in time result in The Culture but it's just a growing pains situation that he and his slatestarcodex friends need to be in charge of it at the moment to get there

e
etienne · December 6, 2023

but Musk IS into Banks! he named the two SpaceX landing barges after Culture ships, the Of Course I Still Love You and the Just Read The Instructions! I know this because I'm a massive fan of Banks and *reformed fan of Musk

I'm sure the footage the journalists are screened is horrible, mostly because the majority of it is AI generated atrocity propaganda

Realized listening to this podcast that the major conflict in Pokémon sword and shield was based on a famous science fiction novel 🤡

Z
Zoey George · December 7, 2023

Sword and Shield are also based on Britain which is fitting because they are the worst games in the series.

R

Just the richest dumb guy among dumb rich guys. Excessive wealth breeds solipsistic stupidity. 100% marginal tax rate, 90% wealth tax; or trials and a head-shortening instrument?

Great Episode! Didn't come up, but I've seen an uptick of new Cybertruck footage in the last few days. It's soooo telling, that the first feature mentioned is bulletproof glass, and all the Elon stans cheer how the doors can withstand machine gun fire, and bow and arrows and such.. They barely even mention max range or top speed or whatever stats normal cars provide... instead he built a car that's mob-proof.

J
Josep C. · December 5, 2023

Casual mob perhaps. Maybe your average North American road rage. I wouldn't count on a Cyber truck standing a chance against any informed thug. Maybe the trick is the appearance. Someone willing to spend money on such stupid shit doesn't have real money anyways. It's not a jaguar, Mercedes, etc.
