Britainology 61: the Mad Lads of Football feat. Joey D'Urso
For this month's first Britainology, Nate and Milo get expert advice from The Athletic's Joey D'Urso, a lifelong football fan and a source of extremely funny anecdotes about the nutters and eccentrics of the English Premier League. We learn about Gazza, Georgie Best, Vinnie Jones, and many more. Hope you enjoy!

Steffen iversen is probably the player milo is trying to think of the US national side recorded a song for the 1990 World Cup, and it’s perhaps the worst rap i have ever heard personal all time favourite football lunatic was Robin Friday, who was probably good enough to play at the highest level, but only played as high as the third division because he was more interested in LSD, heavy metal, and getting banned from every pub in Reading
Can confirm i lived in halls with some guys who were massive stone roses/oasis fans, all born in the mid 90s
My all time favourite football chant is the Reading FC one to the tune of Erotica by Madonna “Bill Oddie Bill Oddie rub your beard all over my body”
Pretty sure Joel Veitch had something to do with that, the rascal!
I'll tell you, honestly, I will LOVE IT if there was a follow up on managers. LOVE IT
Another football mad lad a bit before all of our time: Leigh Richmond Roose. Great Wikipedia article, highly recommend.
As far as naughty football chants go I'm partial to, "Uwe Rosler's grandad bombed Stretford End." (To save people a web search, he was in the Luftwaffe.) Edit: Appreciate the amount of Citeh content in this episode, lads. Cheers.
Episode reminded me of coming to Scotland from Canada to visit my granny in the late 70s; there was a used record fair on a Saturday, so I went along to look for treasure. Right outside Glasgow Central station there was a group of away football fans, packed into a tight rectangle by six mounted police, who would escort them to the grounds (and presumably back again after the match). This was a time when some fans would throw 10p coins (the old, larger ones) that had had the edges sharpened into the opposing fans' area. Tough days.
I live very near the west ham stadium and on the way from both the station and the rough pub nearby. I've been really disappointed with how unthreatening the vibes are on match day. However I feel like Milo might enjoy checking out knollsy and a video of him taking on aggressive opposition fans at a recent European away day
If there is a match on at either of the local grounds (relatively large clubs, one infamous stadium) I do not go to the city center or near either of the grounds. Big brawl like violence probably less common-though I did know kids at school/sixth form who got into football fights at and after matches and two people from a different milieu during my twenties (2010s) who had banning orders- but drunken male pack type activities and harassment very much still the norm. Thanks for the content though, this taxonomy of nonsense assists my quest for compassionate understanding of this benighted land.
