Big Paper is Watching
It's the free one!
Riley, Hussein, and Nate look at the collision course between a rentier economy with a shrinking set of (allegedly) productive activities to support it… and realise the podcast has become de facto illegal in Brisbane for our consistent pro-hoon position, for which we make no apologies.

good one kings
I am a simple man, I hear Nate on a podcast, I enjoy podcast
+1 for “Nate on mic more”
Nate is the steady platform from which the "Nate Bethea Podcast Universe" has grown. He certainly dosen't have much to do with some of its branches, but it wouldnt exisit without his hard work up to now! Also, we cant give Riley too much credit, lol!
I laugh when I see people mention the me extended universe, but at the end of the day it was in my best interest to produce as many shows as I could when I quit my job and had no income lmao
Nate should do more TF appearances
Nothing is scarier to Australian torries than a DUKW full of immigrants hooning across the border
Nate talking about $14 yogurt in Manhattan reminded me of the $30 chicken debacle here in Southern Ontario. As a fellow Canadian, hearing Riley bring up issues plaguing this (apparently covertly) diseased country is both a blessing and a curse. I feel like we don’t have as many progressive podcasts focused on our issues as some other countries, so getting that perspective on current issues is something I greatly appreciate. However, it’s never going to be good news, so it’s also depressing. Great episode as always, fellas.
if only there was a podcast discussing canadian poli, perhaps even one attached to the trash future verse ... alas
The solution to unaffordable mortgages: pay more! There's mortgage insurance so you can pay to be protected against not being able to pay, there's co-ownership so you can pay rent to two different landlords, just one is a bank... This is a business school-ass idea and the person who came up with it should be publicly flensed.
yall keep making jokes about 1984 but didn't make the connection that the bri'ish press is prosecuting the 2 Minutes of Hate against some guy
More Nate on mic! The Nate fan club has spoken!
I think any serious government would be tabling media reform as a key means to stabilise the functionality of institutions. Heavy restrictions on national papers, diluting private ownership of them (say if you made it like owned exclusively by the readers/subscribers of the papers), 6/7 figure fines if they're caught lying, more funding for local newspapers & programs to help budding investigative journalists etc. Of course that will never happen, but it is what it would probs take for it to not be this shit show, I think.
Is the new podcast configuration Lament? I recommend Liminal for catering to the rich perverts the UK will now cater its economy to.
Riley you should just full commit and wear a Hoonigan flat cap and a Monster hoodie and DC skate shoes. At least that's how a Canadian suburbanite would process liking hooning. Oh and also go back to listening to Deadmau5
“go back to” oof, brutal
Love to hear Nate let’s go Nate
1984??????
I love the show, but I hate the shilling for big-hoon
This is the Pleasant Chat configuration
Gonna be That Guy and point out you don’t put eels in jello. Eel flesh naturally contains a shitton of collagen, so boiling them in their own juices is what jellies them and ends up as a convenient way to prepare and preserve the haul.
i genuinely never knew that and that makes way more sense than what i had assumed. i'll grudgingly grant you this one, anglos.
The thing about the culture war in UK media is that they didn't need to fabricate much at all to bring it to the fore. Loads of the classic/traditional British sayings & ideological talking points are entirely woven into the national vernacular, the newspapers just have to appeal to that particular racist brainworm and suddenly you'll encounter otherwise reasonable people going off about how evil X demographic is. It's pretty sickening watching a family member descend into daily mail rhetoric just through people having a "normal" British conversation. Edit - Yes Garry Larson is great and the Far Side comics are essential reading
honestly the old british foods like stargazy pie and jellied eels are good, actually. the horrible stuff is 1950s public school fare
I was stationed in Dubai with the u.s.navy in 2010 and our compound was right next to the migrant "housing"... which was just a conex box with 20 people living in it
Heh, the housing casino must keep going. I would giggle if it wasn't so depressing. If Spain housing crisis wasn't bad enough, Blackrock and other financial vultures came to invest...
The thing you have to understand about Murdoch media in Australia -an all old media firms in the country really- is that basically nobody reads them anymore except for Gen X and older. Rupert Murdoch almost openly runs most of his media in Australia at a loss because he makes his money back in the policies the papers are able to successfully advocate into legislation. Their influence is waning but they still like to appeal to the classic market of pensioners and the worried wealthy. Not to mention that Australia doesn’t have much of a centralised national discourse like the UK and even to the degree the US does.
I’m a dairy farmer our cost of production went from 28p in January last year to 45p in October, we are now being paid less than 40p these last 2 months, another reason for the increase in food prices is the government’s ability to keep food prices suppressed is the ending of subsidies, 1957 35% of the average Uk budget was spent on food, with inflation it’s currently at 16%
I nearly died while listening to this episode. I was working out alone and found myself trapped under a 295lb bar. Had to scream for about ten minutes until someone came and saved me. The whole time I was thinking, "Jesus fuck, I don't want to die listening to Riley talk about the housing market".
Cheers for opening up with a semi salvo on Oz, lads.
“Braking Bad” ?
genuinely love a nate episode. the people are demanding more nate
We, the listener, demand the occasional Nate (and Hussein and Riley) configuration to occur more often!
Honestly, I miss Nate and Alice banter and (inevitable) escalation. 🤌
I think the Australian political fixation on hooning would best be described as "government by current affair program". It's been a fixation of A Current Affair and Today Tonight for at least 30 or 40 years.
and AM radio before that
*Mike Myers Scottish impression* ITS THE FREE HOON
And it's early. 🎶 It's the freeeeeeeee, the freeone🎶
