Boats 2 feat. Zoe Gardner

It's the free one!

Immigration and refugee issues specialist Zoe Gardner (@zoejardiniere) joins the gang to discuss Britain’s transformation from “quite a bit like Children of Men” to “just Children of Men literally.” We also talk about British columnist / politico Iraq War reflections, and a startup.

Honestly the only take I have is that you can't respond to the kind of language used re: refugees "foreign criminals" etc with anything remotely polite. Left politician gets interviewed or it comes up in politics and they need to come back with maximum hostility. Labour telling Braverman to kill herself coz shes fucking scum. Journalist goes "What about the albanian criminal young men" "what about you choke on the rag you publish fuckwit"

Not sure if I can listen to this one. Every time a reactionary gets elected, the liberals go "OMG, this white dude puts our country on the path to fascism", while I glance at the ongoing migrant crisis and think: "What do you mean with 'path'..."

The Australian politician who had the little boat trophy saying "I stopped these" was none other than our former prime-minister scott Morrison Refugee policy has gotten a little better as the hysteria around the issue of "boat people" has died down, these days you'd be hard pressed to find a large number of people who have strong feelings about the issue. That's largely because the number of people who read Rupert Murdoch's papers has dropped dramatically in the last few years. The Labor party is doing *slightly* better now that they're in government, part of that is just a function of them running the bureaucracies better so people's claims don't take three fucking years to process though.

Though it should also be said that Labor were trying to have it both ways in opposition, with smiley photo ops with a family who had been arrested and indefinitely detained in a high profile case, while attempting to outflank the Coalition from the right with calls for STRONGER BORDERS and warmed-over lines about "plane people", so I'd hesitate to send too much praise their way.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/sep/19/i-stopped-these-scott-morrison-keeps-migrant-boat-trophy-in-office I can't believe that for all the horror that the trophy represents.....that the choice of font irks me so much. #cancelled

That trophy is ugly as sin.

I saw a good video on ghost kitchens https://youtu.be/KkIkymh5Ayg, which talked about the difficulty of health inspectors being able to monitor safety standards at ghost kitchens. I assume this problem won't happen with selling food out of a bunch of random people's houses tho.

To answer the question, it was Scott Morrison who had the "I stopped these" boat trophy.

And the Liberal Party is not going well. As of last weekend they have been voted out federally and in every state but Tasmania. Skippy reactionaries keep trying to cosplay as the GOP. Which doesn't work because Australians have a different set of racialised nerocisies.

The "I stopped these" trophy was actually Scott Morrison from his time as immigration minister and he had it from before he was PM 😬

As long as we’re commodifying unpaid female labor, please consider participating in a seed round for my contractor-based home cleaning serving HomemakHer, and daycare provider MotHer.

I'd like to believe that your brilliant new daycare provider was/will-be responsible for the computer aboard the Nostromo in Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece Alien. A film where John Hurt has a very close encounter with a Tech Startup Executive and everyone else dies to the debt collector, who starts pursuing financial compensation from the rest of the crew members but is stopped short of financial annihilation by a woman and Her cat.

It's The Jarring Shift In Tone one! What I find a bit more depressing than usual on this one, is that the heyday of the main topic already happened in my country in the early 00's. The politicians, the absolute inhumane way to treat migrants, and the constant media bombardment. And how was it ¿solved? . In no way, it still happens, yet they say it's mitigated by the "help" of the "friendly" African neighbour country. Someone in the UK looked at Spain and thought: THAT'S HOW.

What drives me the most insane about that startup Shef is that people (women mostly but not exclusively) are ALREADY DOING THIS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR AN APP. Any time I'm anywhere on a highway I see people selling prepared food out of their vehicles, especially like tamales in the southwest US, this is already a thing. The only difference is that you can be taxed working through Shef.
