Busting Offsets feat Dr Jess Green

It's the free one!

This week, Riley, Milo, and Alice join Dr Jess Green (@greenprofgreen) to discuss the concept of carbon offsets and how they’re not the foolproof solution to climate change that every huge polluter who definitely wants to keep polluting seems to think they are! Or maybe they’re just pretending to think that!

*AUSTRALIA ALERT* We’re currently in Australia, and there are tickets available for shows in Sydney: https://musicboozeco.oztix.com.au/outlet/event/3213de46-cef7-49c4-abcb-c9bdf4bcb61f and Canberra: https://au.patronbase.com/_StreetTheatre/Productions/TFLP/Performances

*BRITAINOLOGY ALERT* We’ve added a live show in Melbourne on the 19th of November in which Nate and Milo will present Britainology! Get tickets here: https://tccinc.sales.ticketsearch.com/sales/salesevent/79853

Come now, gang. Between our Comrades at Corner Spati and Riley making himself a known face at every techno event in the northern hemisphere, it's inevitable that a few a Germans start growing on the podcast like moss.

Please come to Germany, but not (just) to Berlin pretty please. Used to live in England and have always had a fascination with your cursed wet rock.

For me, from Switzerland, I started listening in 16-17. Working in it, I saw how much 'innovation' was just a scam to get public funding, how much 'revolutionaries' were just guys with apps. Plus all the political stuff that came bubbling up gave me an immense feeling of "The Future has been cancelled". Plus, Switzerland may be currently nicer than Britain, but fuck if it does not share its psychosis. We had columnists writing (read with Nate british voice): "I don't know why they fuss about this covid virus. We added emergency beds, but we don't even need them". If there's a country bemoaning that the mass-grave they dug was too big and inefficient, its fucking Switzerland.

I have to cut in on the part of the degrowthers... yes if the proposals were like the potted summary she gave, they would be lacking nuance but none of the central texts I've read on it are what she described. At very broad levels it's a very global-focused whole earth system economic philosophy so sure, if you only read the very first paragraph of the text, it's going to seem reductive, but every theory of degrowth or steady state economics I've read acknowledges the need for not only redistribution of current existing wealth but redistribution of growth, and there's a whole scholarship dedicated to degrowth from below. The big problem with degrowth is that it's immediately misunderstood based on knee jerk assumptions which is why I don't like the term, but the concept is much more complex and I'd expect it to be better discussed by an expert, particularly in a leftist space.

Sorry one more thing, if you'd like to read a really interesting exploration of Malthusianism and degrowth that teases apart how they're not the same thing and in the process really revisits the actual theories of Malthus and critiques them, I'd recommend Giorgios Kallis's Limits, it's very short and very readable but packs a lot of great analysis in there!!

They say about us Huns that we are boring and opposed to diversity, but we love to observe a country that is horrible in a different way from our own. So.. Looking forward to your live show FROM STUTTGART.

As an alleged Canadian who's lived most of her life in the US but also briefly in Vancouver, same for both countries 🙃 But tbh lately it's mostly just been feeling worse about everywhere as the UK seems to be heading for the same level of tent city human suffering found in both LA and Vancouver and anticipating the next level fucked Nextdoor vibes the Brits will have when there are encampments everywhere because their society is joining us in failing!!!!!
