Britainology 45: The Queue

Call it an act of reportage. Call it 'we simply couldn't refuse the opportunity.' We went down to the queue for Queen Elizabeth II's lying in state and interviewed people. We also recorded our observations. It was... an experience.

How many people will catch COVID in the Queen's Queue?

I've never heard of Jelly Babies. Would appreciate anyone who could tell me how they compare to Haribo Gummies as that's my go to sweet treat here in the PNW.

A
Andrew Llewellyn · September 22, 2022

Jelly babies are much more stiff and less rubbery than gummies. They've kind of got a similar consistency as an eraser.

You can hear the excitement in Milo’s voice when he asks, ‘and are these your Mums?’

This is like the equal-and-opposite of the Jeremy Vine episode, I love it

Milo going 'yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah' a million times: check

This was amazing! Please do more on scene episodes. You're both great interviewers!

I think I feel about hearing Kent accents a bit like these people feel about the Queen.

A

Love the on the ground reporting for this episode. Milo seems pretty natural in doing these interviews with the general public pretty professional vibe. Great episode guys.

Taking someone to Poundbury is the Brit equivalent of taking someone to poundtown

The British Navy actually had an exemption to be allowed to shave, in the days before the safety razor people kept cutting arteries whenever there was a big swell, so naval tradition is still that you grow and keep trim a full beard (and the main reason for the exemption is if it is the common view that you are *so bad* at growing a beard that you would bring disgrace to the uniform if you tried to pull it off).

Can confirm that my uncle saw Her Majesty in Belgrade two days ago. She was conspicuously shopping at the London Idea supermarket, a classic blunder by expatriated British monarchs in RS.

Traditionally, the only British Army types who were permitted beards were Pioneer troops, who wear an insignia of crossed axes to mark their status. This ends the Boring Old Git segment of this podcast.

This is so good. The live commentary in the field first hand vibe reporting is some incredible stuff. And you guys are great at the interviews as well.

I would literally pay for a blackpool illuminations live reporting ep. blackpool has its own distinct vibes and it's very different from the london vibes that are usually the focus of britainology. you've got to love the mix of nanas on coach trips and wild hen doos

e
etienne · September 21, 2022

ive heard enough *of* Blackpool but not enough *about* it that I now really want to know what's the deal with. Namely that it has an amusement park with a giant terrible Vekoma roller coaster called something like the Pepsi Max Big One, and my favourite electronic music artist, VHS Head, is based over there

As an American/Canadian, I for one would love a vox pop at professional darts. It’s on TV here in Ontario all the time, but I do not understand the insanity of the fandom, the pro wrestling-style personalities of the players, nor the extremely serious tone of the commentary. It seems an ideal Britainological topic for those of us outside the UK. Loved this ep, too!

R
Rusty Shackleford · September 21, 2022

Just a Britainology on professional darts in general would be great, even--I was totally blown away, as an American, to find out about it.

Would absolutely love more on location Britainology! It gives a perspective to the British people that I honestly haven't gotten from this show before

Becoming convinced that Milo's natural back and forth with the public means he absolutely needs a jeremy vine style call in radio show of his own

TF is like the best 5 bucks a month I've ever spent. It's impossible to not love the vibes between all the hosts, and the episodes featuring professional journalists or experts in other fields alongside their antics always cracks me up AND teaches me a lot.

H
Hitachii · September 21, 2022

Idk if that comment about the christian pamphlet ppl helping people know what is at the end of the queue was supposed to be metaphorical, but it was beautifully executed either way. Also, idr if they said this already but how about 'queueanon'

k
kiwi · September 21, 2022

Honestly this was a cool little episode just hearing the British vibes, catching all the different accents, and seeing how something like this just calls to folks. Nice human interest piece for a once in a lifetime event.

One the one hand, funerals are by definition once-in-a-lifetime, but on the other, since the queen had two birthdays she should also have two funerals?

People selling cans from the front of their terraces is giving me strong Carnival vibes
