Universal Basic TSA

(Audio issues should be fixed!)

It's the free one!

The gang looks at the ossified politics of Britain, now unable to conceive of responding to a once-in-a-generation permanent energy crisis with anything more than a one-off payment and "good luck, you're gonna need it!" Then, we discuss a startup that looked at the spate of school shootings around the country and said, "it is with a heavy heart that we must profit from this."

I've been listening to TF for about a year now, and I can't pretend to understand the majority of British culture references, and if you were to ask me why Quaaludes Acaster is funny, I would not be able to explain it, as I have no clue who James Acaster is and have only a passing familiarity with Quaaludes. However, Quaaludes Acaster is the funniest fucking thing I've ever encountered in a podcast.

The rant in the early part of the episode is probably the hardest I've laughed in a while.

Young people would rather 'go morbin' than condemn the behaviour of Jeremy Corbyn.

James Acaster’s partner ran off with Rowan Atkinson, fun fact

To depressingly inform Hussein: Most school shootings are someone bringing a gun to school in the morning and shooting later that day. But those are usually pistols, and there are usually only a few casualties, so they don't usually make national headlines for long or even at all. I guess this might sort of stop some of those kids? Except kids aren't dumb and these systems aren't foolproof, and they explicitly won't do a damn thing about a person with an AR-15 assaulting the school while cops watch, so.... yeah.

Great that TF and The Dollop both did Quaalude-themed episodes this week. Kismet in the face of insanely depressing nonsense.

If there was a podcast Emmys, Milo would submit this episode for consideration

Plot twist; it's the Laptop Gun from Perfect Dark.

Consider taking a nap? Is that a Warhammer 40k necron reference? Did the necrontyr go into a 60 million year nap to avoid paying for energy bills back then?

As mad as Milo got at Reeves, what horrifies me more is that she *also* clearly believes in the fucking Philips Curve. It is the one consistent through-line in her Cost of Living policies and means she actively wants there to be unemployment to tackle inflation and no amount of cajoling or necessity has shifted her on that one point. She is *insanely* Monetarist in her economics, and the only right way to read that is, she is a thorough going Thatcherite.

It's a fantastic grudge Milo has, and I suppose if it was ever explained I would find it less funny

Hussein basically has the right of it: gun control is simultaneously politically impossible for the Democrats (perpetual excuses for why the Senate can't do anything + SCOTUS + the fact that there is a not insignificant portion of right-wing males in the country who were raised on power fantasies about murdering ATF agents when "they come fer our guns" + the fact it isn't obvious how much longer we have until a reliable long-rifle can be 3d printed at home) and incredibly popular with what Democrats view as their new coalition: insufferable suburbanites and every minority group the Republican base would like to revoke the rights of/murder. The Dems (who I have to stress to you are every bit as incompetent at politics as Keir Starmer, they just have the additional boon of incredibly low expectations) view the issue as one that is always pressing enough to gin up their voters without creating any surprise or outrage when they inevitably fail to do anything, because no one actually thinks they can. That makes it the perfect distraction. Gun massacres also make for great cable news ratings, which contributes to the centering of gun control in the public mind.

I genuinely thought Jimmy Acaster was a character from one of those UK sketch comedy shows that never aired anywhere else until I saw a clip of his stand-up on the blue bird site. "Oh hey, it's the Milo guy," was my first and only thought before I moved along. Anyway, this is a depressing episode, but if you take a shot every time the gang says "stochastic" it's just kind of The Iceman Cometh depressing instead. E: Shot of liquor, probably important to specify given the topics covered.

just heard a clip of maxwell's voice and i cant tell if his voice did sound that menacing or if it was th sinister brass and heavy reverb under the video i was listening to that seemed to be advancing some kind of theory of his death
