Dudes of Arms feat. Patrick Wyman
Patrick Wyman, host of the wonderful Tides of History, returns to the podcast to talk about the development of the state and warfare over the last six hundred years. We also discuss yet another landlord-centric startup (sure seems to be a lot of them these days!)

Fuck's sake, eight years of the dissertation, ten years of conferences and a whole ass book - and the place I find the conversation I wanted to be in the whole fucken time is TF. Bless you all, you brilliant fuckers.
the British metaverse is just that Duke Nukem 3D mod from twitter
“What is the color of the header on r/Hereford?”
Liberal Crime Squad needs the Capitalist Crime Squad sequel, where you commit various petty crimes and apply shoe polish to crater rival real estate trades.
Keep on fighting the war fight, guys
For me at least, Tides of History feels kinda like listening to a lecture. They're great, but a little... dry? Patrick Wyman as a guest on TF/Chapo/WTYP/whathaveyou is like listening in on a raucous, but mostly on topic, seminar. Consistently a top 10 episode wherever it is. Dunno. maybe it's a different mix between the edu- and the -tainment from one context to the other that l'm responding to.
Ukraine seems like a good example of the problems re: relying on Elite SOF Snake Eaters to do all the actual fighting, which is that one private with a Stinger can fuck up your whole plan
Why does 37 feel so old, asking for a friend
One word. Knees
I loved Nate getting on Riley over saying warfighting lol.
I always listen to Nate talk about his millitary experience, and think and wonder like if they had podcasts in the 1850's would US Grant have found a job he was good at?
Sherman and Grant host "His Truth Is Marching On" podcast would be an incredible E1 bit. They even *look* like podcasters
when you were talking about the Weirdness that comes out of people in spite of standardised military training, as well as the fact of grizzled old men enjoying conflict, as well as the idea of a certain "mindset" i was reminded of how from my perspective (training in a karate/MMA type system headed by one of Australia's most decorated commandos) seemingly inextricable the modern day real-fighting martial arts community is to the militarism talked about here. i think if you can find a place like what i'm talking about you can know/experience in at least a shallow sense what all the "warfighting" mindset is about without having to be insane enough to go get shot over something you shouldn't be involved in (but still insane enough to want to know that mindset or people with it. it is very much a mixed, but still mostly poisonous bag)
I think Riley had it right, the thing to remember about these mercenaries is that they are often very divorced- Fallen Soldiers by George Mosse is well worth a read: it’s about the “Myth of the War Experience” that emerges after WW1 and poisoned the collective consciousness of almost every major combatant. He also tracks the mythologisation and glamourisation of modern warfare, starting from Byron and the volunteers in Greece in the 1830s
It's OK, Alice. We know you play 2 instead of 3 because it has retinues. (I'm not a gamer so I don't know if 3 has an equivalent mechanic. Sorry to use the g-word slur.)
Alice is correct, CK2 is better
Yall didn't do the Stewart Lee bit about the beaker people for long enough, more of that please
