Britainology 34: The Suez Crisis (feat. Alice Caldwell-Kelly)

Now unlocked to the $5 tier!

For this month's second Britainology, Milo and Nate are joined by Alice Caldwell-Kelly to discuss Britain's 1956 invasion of Egypt, how Britain got spectacularly owned, and the eternal weak point of the British military throughout the entire operation: cupboards. Hope you enjoy!

The Umm Kalthoum anecdote makes me wonder if there are some Fayrouz Lebanese Civil War singles consigned to memory.

I’ve read that’s why they were called The Police; Stewart was having a go at his dad

Britainology is always great, but a Britainology with Alice talking about military psychos and weirdo politicians is truly a special treat

I love the Suez Crisis because it's a rare Cold War moment where the US and USSR agreed on something, namely that Britain should just Not.

As a resident of a region that has a climate that might be more depressing than that of Scotland (US PAC NW. What's the sun?), I think what really gives Scotland the greater bleakness is the prevalence of other muted colors beyond the sky. I remember going to Edinburgh as a student and being amazed that someone had chosen to build a city that was so uniformly grey in a climate that was universally grey against the background of mountains colored a... mix of muted browns and grays. At least in the Pacific NW we have a lot of greenery during the winter.

Edinburgh looks like a Mardi Gras when compared to Aberdeen. Just the one shade of grey there, including the sea.
