Attack of the 100-Foot Metaverse

It's the free one!

We look at the shape of the (contracting) frontiers of politics and (expanding) frontiers cooked up in the minds of our most addled billionaires. Let Mark Zuckerberg make a skinwalker out of you, let Elon Musk put your brain into a tunnel, but try to work a little less and - as the British state always does - then "we got problems."

Dozing off to great riffs, some movie is mentioned about a video-game. Still waiting on that Stallone drop

I think those job seeking policies are based off Australia's work for the Dole scheme (which has killer a few poor people!)

Anyone else get the sense that the TF Lad(ie)?s would totally shill for crypto and NFTs if they were mined and minted on the Matt-Hancockchain?

Procopius’ Secret History, but what he’s mad about is that there was cake at the party where Theodora fucked the geese

Coming from the American perspective: Yes, it is absolutely intolerable when "civility" wins out, although at least in the UK a Labour government should, theoretically, be capable of doing anything at all. Obviously the specific ways in which the American constitutional model interacts with overdetermining forces in society produces an even more obnoxious kind of preachy liberalism in which a failure to govern is its own moral accomplishment.

This seems like a good place to ask: all the references on the pod as of late to the fall of the Byzantine empire are making me want to read a decent book or two about the period. I like history and I'm reasonably patient, but am very much a layman doofus who's never formally studied history in general past high school or that topic specifically at all. With that in mind: anyone know of an author or a title that might be good for me to start with so I can fully appreciate the eunuch-stabbing jokes?

Wickham's The Inheritance of Rome is a great overall introduction to early Dark Ages history, fairly readable as histories go, which will get you up to 1000 AD. Then Herrin's Byzantium is a good complementary overview of the trajectory of the Empire

I knew all that tertiary Byzantine studies I took in university would one day pay off.
