Dispatches from the Metaverse feat. Jathan Sadowski

It's the free one!

Mark Zuckerberg is building the future of the internet, and the future of everything, and it’s basically a much more exploitative version of Habbo Hotel. Where we’re going, you won’t need eyes to see… it’s the Metaverse! And thankfully we've got Jathan Sadowski, friend of the show and cohost of the This Machine Kills Podcast, to explain it further.

Just so I can stop thinking about it: Jathan Statham. You're welcome.

Listen cupcake, I have to record a four-hour episode of This Machine Kills or I am *literally* going to become a consultant for Amazon.

The thing that musk/bezos and the metaverse really have in common is they are both an attempt to detach growth from any material limits. Infinite worlds! Virtual property! Line go up! Second life was *also* this, so i can't wait for someone to become a metaverse property magnate and do a metaverse interview where someone fires flying dicks at them from the crowd https://metro.co.uk/2006/12/22/pink-penis-attack-on-second-life-chat-show-3433996/ Time is a flat circle so i get to look forward to that.

Oh come on, we all know Milo played as Scout back in the day. It should be noted that there's a lot of news surfacing recently of AAA game publishers having enormous defence contracts whilst not informing any single developer studio under their umbrella, that they're essentially building & providing tech to blow up children with. So yeah, that's uh fun, I guess. A mall with a ball pit? Wait, is Facebook trying to make Dashcon happen in VR?

This is some nerd shit but its related to the metaverse stuff, read at your own peril. Magic The Gathering introduced something you might call a metaverse in 2002 in MagicOnline. It allowed players to play with and collect digital versions of cards which could be traded between players and, in limited circumstance, traded in to the company in exchange for physical versions of the cards. Theres a whole secondary economy of resellers selling cards and even renting cards out. So far so standard, but heres the twist: they released another digital version of the game called MagicArena in 2018 which is competing with MagicOnline and it has none of the metaverse shit. Players cant trade the cards at all, so theres no secondary market. The reason for this is that theres a fairly high barrier to entry for magic, both in terms of cost and things you have to learn, which MagicArena gets around but giving new players a huge amount of cards (which they unlock through playing tutorials) as well as giving you a bunch of stuff every day for logging in. And they can throws goodies at players without any fear of crashing their simulated economy. If Hasbro ran a metaverse of collectable digital objects for almost 20 years and then transitioned away from that to a more service based model then somehow I dont think the startup guys arnt going to be able to get it to work.

full pointdexter mode again but common Riley Scala isn't an incredibly advanced language, it's just a really awkward fusion of OOP and Functional Programming that compiles down to the Java Virtual Machine and that some nerds think will scale better across cores because of the Pure Functional aspects. Twitter of all websites started moving to Scala in like '14 before deciding the language was too annoying to deal with and reverted back to just Java or whatever

Twitter was originally built with Ruby on Rails not Java. They still use Scala in many of their projects

It’s a little thing, but can I just say how funny it is that every time the remainiacs are brought up in an episode, Milo tries to do a bit about the Animaniacs and is immediately steamrolled over by one of the other hosts. Low key one of the best accidental running bits.

Steamrolled riffs that never were are some of the most sublime parts of the podcasting med- *I am hustled into a van by an extremely specific kind of cop*
