It's time once again for Britainology, and this week Milo and Nate are joined by Phoebe Roy (who you have have heard on Masters of Our Domain and 10,000 Posts) to discuss British 9/11. Do we mean 7/7? The 2011 riots? No, we mean the death of the Queen of Our Hearts, Princess Diana Spencer, in August 1997. I was born a few days after lady Di died and will forever be grumpy about the fact her funeral meant my mum and I had to stay in hospital an extra day incase the crowds made getting back to hospital (in an emergency) impossible. Ironically my parents claim the streets were empty and there was no traffic 馃槀

The hysteria you described reminds event I witnessed in Poland. As a teenager in 2005 I've been baffled to see teacher (a ~30yo woman) with tears smudging her makeup the day after news of John Paul II death arrived. Conservatives used his death to push country even more to the right calling us a "generation jp2". I'm pretty convinced the royals and the aristocracy in general (which let's face it, is just their extended family) are just Lovecraftian horror monsters after so much inbreeding, and one day we're gonna find an occult altar covered in children's blood somewhere in the Palace cellars.

If you ever do a Britainology on New Wave (which I think you've talked about doing in the past?) you should try and get Martyn Ware on to talk about it. He's got a podcast of his own and is one of very few musicians of his era to not be absolute melts
He did a fun talk at my uni, where he manged spend almost the whole talk not mentioning the Human League, despite all the posters round uni hyping him up as such. Just talked about his 3D sound installation company instead mostly. He was great though, very humble. He's a huge fan of the Teenage Engineering OP-1 synth, I remember him saying about that. Fun fact, I guess.
The worst thing about Diana's death is either there being no cartoons on telly cos she selfishly died on my 12th birthday, or the premature end to her hot milf summer. I'm undecided on which though.
listening to this reminded me that Mohamed Al-Fayed produced a "documentary" about his conspiracy theories directed by fucking Keith Allen of all people (Lily's dad, for those unfamiliar). it never got a proper release due to the looming threat of litigation but it's circulated on internet backchannels for years now
