Imprisoned in the Southie of the Real: TF Reviews 'Spenser Confidential'

We talked so much about the Netflix-produced Mark Wahlberg Boston Cop film SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL. What a great punchline! What an absurd concept to declare that 85 million people had watched it. Anyway, we realised that we had to actually view the film in order to complete the cycle, so we brought on Olga Koch to review it with Riley, Milo, and Alice. Hope you enjoy!

The really sad thing about Spencer Confidential, is that I know someone who reads the series of books it's based on, and according to her they're actually pretty cool. She was obviously extremely disappointed when she saw movie...

Does anyone have any trouble with distinguishing between Mark Wahlberg & Ben affleck? They're so generically similar I have a hard time remembering which films they're in, and always get confused. Same trouble with Anthony Hopkins & Michael Douglas.

Back up… I can't go back and listen to all three of these again, but did anyone note that there was a reasonably popular TV show based on the same books back in the 80's? I never watched it, but I recall Spencer: For Hire being a thing back in the Magnum PI and Remington Steele days… oh, and a ton of spin-off made-for-tv movies… Avery Brooks' big role before Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

I realised 40 minutes into this podcast that instead of being familiar with this plot after hearing it made fun of in another podcast or w/e: I had, in fact, watched the movie and forgotten it's existence.

Can confirm that Sweet Caroline is a huge 'Boston song.' In the past few years since I moved to massachusetts from New York, I have heard it more times than I had in my entire life

U still gotta do extinction though I didn't sit through both series to go through this pain alone.

R
Rach · December 4, 2020

Actually it wasn't even extinction I'm thinking of, the Elon Musk one is 'Salvation'. Shows how much I paid attention to that 😂

Ok this one has been driving me nuts for a while, what is the source of the "soviet union but shit and expensive" quote?

Milo's Southie Asimo was one of the funniest things I have ever heard

D
Dave Dorricott · December 3, 2020

My take away from this is the inspiration to write a biopic of ASIMO voiced by Bill Burr

It's kinda ironic that some 20 cents per word MFA creative writing graduate is writing a shitty O Henry story about an office girl with stunted artistic ambition... I think this gopuff ad copy is an actual plagiarism of a British interwar short story I read years ago which had something about an sad office girl jacking it to a Lord Kitchener poster. Good story. Can't remember the name.

Honestly gopuff is pretty tight. They do delivery far more effective than postmates or any other delivery app that exists. Nearly always less than 25 minutes from order to delivery. Their pay scale for drivers has gotten far shittier over the years tho. They used to get payed hourly plus gas stipends

Trashfuture · December 3, 2020

That’s sort of the thing isn’t it? When Uber started in London it was drivers over £100k a year for full time plus some overtime — that is a genuinely amazing salary. But now it’s whittled down to the point where new drivers hardly make minimum wage after you account for their expenses.

go puff is the only good start up riley has ever presented, they delivered ice cream, toilet paper, ramen, and soap to me when it was 118 degrees out in AZ and I was too depressed to leave the house 😎
