Britainology 5: The Cult of the Legend
We brought on Riley to discuss a phenomenon as eternally British as bad weather itself: the legend. Who are British legends? What makes them act this way? How do you create a taxonomy of figures to distinguish between the Essex Geezer, the Entrepreneurial Legend, the High Street Hard Man, and Tim Westwood? Well, we gave it our best go.

Strong "guy who talks too much in seminar" vibes from Riley on this one
For some real old school funny Tim Westwood nostalgia listen to the intro on this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4WnGHIK88k&list=PLjIuADMrDKIYxnw8sQHFwAKThlC6iqU-r&index=2 This was the first time I was introduced Westwood when my friend bought this album when I was a kid. At the time I was just impressed that the UK has a popular Hip Hop Radio show as rap wasn't popular in Australia at the time. But I was really shocked when I found out a few years ago that Westwood was still kicking around. I though he would have faded into obscurity by now, but the UK likes to hold on their celebrities.
I'm used to not hearing city accents on TF but good god one of you must know someone with the standard roadman accent - it can't be that alien if your studios are east. I petition for more working class accents on the show. Failing that, someone who hasn't studied classics would be a start.
Cannot wait a Partridge episode if that鈥檚 on the cards.

We need Britianology to come up North and West!
I did suggest Morrissey on Twitter :D
What were Riley's wine recommendations again?
Was gonna suggest they just spend an hour going through r/madlads which used to be full of "bet him he wouldnt lay on the ground" content. But I just checked the sub and it's bad now. tps://www.vice.com/en/article/3dapm5/reddits-r-madlads-captures-the-death-throes-of-british-lad-culture
at this point Im almost ashamed to ask but what is the opening music from?
Reminds me of PJ Harvey, but I'm not sure.
They actually made an episode about legends the absolute mad lads
Interesting to get a southern perspective on The Legend
Being half-Irish half-Czech I know full well who this guy is despite never having been to Britain. This guy very much exists in Ireland. Also he's hated and a nuisance in the Czech Republic. He's usually in Ruzyne Prison, desperately trying to call his mates from Hull as a Belorussian man patiently explains to him that in Czech prisons you have to pay rent. The Legend is the Rubber Bandits' Yer Da's best Friend: https://youtu.be/iYgPznBrjiA
You pay rent in prison? Now that's fucked up.
Where do the kray twins fit into this framework? As like the ultimate dramatised hard man legends
Brilliant episode. I have to say though, this feels such a specific Southeastern /Essex thing, that (Someone from the South and lives in the South West ) feels a bit odd to me. Like I don't have an instinctive frame of reference as such. It's the first time I've had that in this series. I guess maybe it's because I never watched Towie when it was such a huge phenomenon. I took one look at it for a minute & wondered how the fuck anyone could put up with primary school levels of acting & plot, and proceed to watch hundreds of episodes of it. Still, it was fun hearing about the depressing aspirations of Lower Middle class types within Essex. I REALLY wanna see the gang explore the North and the South West some time though. Just to get out of the home counties for a bit. I'd happily help with a West Country episode! 馃榿
Definitely need to do some travelling South West. In ep 1 they thought Tricky's Bristolian as fuck accent was a Londoner doing a fake american accent.
Riley doesn't get what this show is for. Get the Boonta Vista gals and guys on next time and make this show properly stupid.
i found camelot castle on street view and i literally howled, thanks for the tip boys
"Too fucking late sunshine" from Milo had me in absolute stitches.
Oi oi
I went to the university of Bristol from 2010-13. Even the less posh people there were still posh as fuck, and the ones from London 100% talked in the phoneshop accent
