The Emperor’s New Episteme feat. Jay

We have an opportunity to speak with Jay, a union organizer in the UK hospitality industry, about the ways in which that sector is particularly hostile to labour organizing and, unsurprisingly, owned by ghouls all the way up and down. But before that, Nate, Hussein, and November discuss Trump’s declaration about calling AI “Super Intelligence,” and the fact that he’s forced a bunch of tech CEOs to sign a half-baked manifesto about it.

Jay’s union is Unite and you can learn more about it here!

Jay said that a Hong Kong VC firm owns a chunk of the pub trade. The overwhelming irony of 21st century Chinese money squeezing profits out of everyone involved in the British alcohol addiction trade - it’s the British Century of Humiliation too, not just the ACOH.

Glad to hear Unite are better in other parts of the country but, when we organised our London hospitality venue and asked for support, they were nowhere to be found. Got a lot of support from grassroots unions like UVW (previously interviewed on the show I believe) and IWGB though.

The AI bubble is bigger than everyone thinks. It is turtles all the way down, and tech ghouls are terrified.

I know somebody who's trying to get a visa so she can quit her job as a engineer designing her nation's renewable energy build-out that has bought her a house & a car, so she can go live with her UK boyfriend & live comfortably as a stay-at-home-mom off of the huge piles of money he has to be making in the hospitality industry on a 0-hour contract & I've been basically doing the dad screaming to his daughter from inside the blackhole at the end of Interstellar trying to stop her, I'm going to clockwork orange her with this episode

The breathing/screaming at the end reminded me of Ballmer Developer's Remix. Except sad/angry rather than manic.

Structuralist vs Post Structuralists … in 1996 we found hidden notes of Saussure from the 1890s (he died in 1913) in his vacation greenhouse where he grew his own oranges in switzerland. Thus these manuscripts are called The Orangery Manuscripts And were published later. The largest of text size is the "De l'essence double du langage" ("On the Dual Essence of Language") … and pretty much Saussure anticipates the post structuralists and he himself is a post structuralists. But since the famous 1916 text that created structuralism is assembled 3 years after Saussure death by friends who did not even attend the 1912 and 1913 lectures. Well … ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To me it is obvious: in his mind artificial = artificial sweetener as in Diet Coke. Which everyone knows is not as good as sugar. It's a very The Apprentice thing to rebrand something that's not selling. He's been doing a low energy sort of greatest hits montage where he's trying all the levers that worked before to no effect

Re: USAF furries, I know a guy who was a USAF firefighter who had a house with his wife in some flyover army town where an entire room was dedicated to their collection of dildos and body pillows.

Regarding Super Intelligence and Lake America: this shit is so literally Orwellian. Trump yells at reporters for not using his Newspeak. The economy has never been better. Etc... Everyone goes along with it because they don't want to lose access. The heliocopter rides for activists are getting closer. On a lighter note: Vermont is having perfectly crisp autumn weather and the foilage is popping. Strong winds uesterday knocked it down a bit vit still just lovely. Gonna be sweetly sad in my middle weight jacket for a bit today.

@Nate You're doing a good job and this episode including the interview was still interesting but here's some hopefully constructive criticism: As an interviewer, try to talk (significantly) less than the interviewee, you don't need to relate everything to your own experience. In general: Try not to rant, ask more questions and focus on facilitating conversation as a host.

A
Andrew Davis · October 7, 2026

I appreciated the more conversational tone and total absence of the Randian length monologues that define this show's consistently below average interviews. (In style, not substance.) Besides, real Britainology heads know Nate can take it up many more notches.

I think Nova gives sad young aunt, sad older cousin vibes, more than dad vibes. (In the sense that sad young aunt and sad older cousin both give "fucks, but feels somehow spiritually depressed about it" vibes.) EDIT - Okay the phrase "Foucault and Trump would have a similar taste in men, but for different reasons" has done irreparable damage to the archive of Cultural Theory lectures stored in my memory.

r
roland00 · October 6, 2026

Nova is totally sad but cool aunt vibes > give "fucks, but feels somehow spiritually depressed about it" for example Nova referenced a Sopranos meme about Oracles … (the rich as croesus line that Ralph C drops on Artie B, Ralph C portrayed by the actor Joe Pantoliano who also did the villian Cypher / Mister Reagan from the Matrix, the steak guy) Croesus of Lydia was the richest man in the world for 500s bc for he invented standardized coin money of consistent weights and measures with metal purity. He was also married into a family for there was a famous solar eclipse so his dad gave his sister in marriage to secure the peace treaty after the spooky sun and moon thing. So when Croesus of Lydia brother in law is attacked by his nephew in law Cyrus the Great future king of persia … Croesus of Lydia goes to the Oracle of Delphi and asks what shall I do for Croesus wants revenge. The Oracle replied, "If you cross the Halys River, a great empire will fall." the Oracle giving an almost impossible to defeat prophecy for unless marriage occurs or a stalemate one empire will fall. So Croesus attacks his nephew to avenge his sisters husband honor and Croesus loses everything. (sidenote everyone in this family sucks just like the sopranos) ===== A great empire will fall and one should be aware of this before one does Oracles the company or LLMs
