The Fermentation Barge feat. Mattie Lubchansky and Jaya Saxena

It's the food one, in which we discuss the weird fixations of the Make America Healthy Again death cult and their particular emphasis on "real food," however that might be defined today. And we also have to talk about the strangely heavy jeans that RFK Jr is always wearing. It's a whole lot all at once.

you guys encasing ur ham in aspic (jello) was ABOUT FOOD SAFETY before fridge/freezers were widespread u would just put ur meat in a big mold of it and it would preserve it. you could travel with it or just have it stay for however long in the kitchen and not spoil. then you just remove from the solidified goo and serve! ur grandma did the jello ham for food safety reasons

The problem is any meaningful reformation of the American Food system is basically a direct attack on capitalism. So what you get is individual choices based on the marketing of several different ethical views on farming all blended together into an at best useless slop and at worst empowered child murderer. I'm not surprised pesticides would be the dividing line. Actually banning them would be good (mostly for everyone who lives and works in farm country, and the ecosystems we're obliterating) but it would also end animal factory farming and cheap beef plus is a direct attack on the bottom line of agribusiness and food processing. Now that doesn't mean people would starve but it does mean burger price go up, which if you have any real concerns about animal welfare, or climate or HUMAN HEALTH you're probably recognize has to happen sooner or later anyway but would be anathema to the right. And we still need to solve inequality too to make that work which is why we're probably stuck in hell till the whole damn thing breaks.

This moment may have passed but if you're in a red state and working on actual food issues, SNAP, famer's markets, nutrition classes, whatever try and sneak it in under the Food is Medicine umbrella. You may as well use MAHA for a some political cover because that's all were getting out of this.

jamin · April 30, 2026

I have the perfect story to encapsulate the median American voter health experience. I was at a house party where a man offered everyone cheese puffs insisting they were fried in beef tallow, then 10 minutes later went outside to smoke a cigarette.

I'm 1000% convinced there will be an expose in ten years that the 'processed food' panic was purely a marketing gimmick by the meat industry panicked about increased sales of vegan and veggie food.

C
Chibigodzilla · April 25, 2026

The thing that bothers me, as a pedant, about the 'processed food' discourse is that they don't define their terms. In this way of thinking 'processed foods' are bad but they only mean certain means of processing. Butchering is a way of processing food. Cooking is a way of processing food. Baking is a way of processing food. Fuck's sake, chewing is a way of processing food. But, of course, those ways of processing don't count.

H
HAUNTER · April 26, 2026

D
Dryacocelass · April 25, 2026

This is my pet peeve as a invertebrate zoologist so I do have to discuss it whenever I hear someone say it. It's kinda besides a lot of the point of the episode I know. You cannot wipe out mosquitos without fairly extreme ecosystem shifts. The larvae are vital aquatic predators and the adults are vital food sources for species such as bats, mosquitoes are important plant pollinators. Removing them would have immense ecosystem impacts. Of the 3500 mosquito species only a few even bite humans. I could go on but this is a podcast comment not an essay

J
Joshua Fitzpatrick · April 27, 2026

quick addition about vegetarianism/veganism and milk. Switzerland is a milk country. We produce cattle for milk. We have relatively cheap veal, because its simply a "byproduct" of producing milk. It took me a while to understand the vegan argument against milk.

Look, making food is important socially and so on, but it’s not joining the marines, so cut out this best-of-the-best shit. And let’s stop calling this shit “art,” it lets people get away with too much. Food is important, and a chef’s place in the hierarchy (name of the position notwithstanding) is below the guy who presses the button to make the machine can beans, below the 13 year old being illegally made to clean the blades of the chicken processor, below the the guy shoveling shit at a dairy farm. This bullshit killed my friend. P.S. “chef” means “boss”, and never forget it

He’s the perfect representative for how they want to turn the failures of our shitty profit driven healthcare system into another example of “personal responsibility”. They won’t ban any of the chemicals in our food that’s bad but they will tell you about “other options” that are batshit insane and whether you take that advice or not you still lose and United Healthcare will continue to spend billions meant for healthcare on stock buybacks for it’s shareholders lmao I love this hellhole of a country

31:11 Crucially, *you* are going to live in the pod and eat the bug. *He* is going to live in a nice house and eat steak with tallow-fried eggs. For all that conservatives love to whine about "the elites", what they actually mean is that they feel they're on the wrong side of the dividing line.

T
Toli · April 27, 2026

preaching to the choir here obviously but "The Elites" to conservatives has always either just been a thinly-veiled code phrase for "The Jews" or has meant whoever they think has too much cultural influence, e.g. the blue-haired barista with they/them pronouns who makes $16 an hour
