Dire Straits feat. Josef Burton
Josef joins us again to discuss the ongoing disaster in the Persian Gulf, and the crumbling not only of the facade of imperial legitimacy but imperial omnipotence. Also, we look at a startup that could only be called a “moonshot.”

I think I remember that AC5 mission
Can we get a name for that wonderfully vocal cat contributor about 44 minutes in? They seemed to have important opinions to share

Look the giant space rail gun is technically possible but generally people propose building it *on* the moon because it has a lower gravity and no atmosphere. The Gerald Bull space guns, HARP (Canadian and American gun) Project Babaylon (Iraqi Gun) did work and did send scientific payloads to space and could have made orbit if the US and Canadian military allowed it too or if the British pipeline company they contracted out for the Iraqi gun didn't figure out what it was before finishing it.
I was just thinking of the alleged Iraqi space program lol
Newt Gingrich is just reprising his role (as himself) in 80s nuclear war movie Countdown To Looking Glass (which was also centred on a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz) in which when asked if there was anything worth nuclear war, he basically said 'no, but nuke 'em anyway because something something freedom'. Except now he wants to nuke an area just next to Dubai to make a canal.
Someone read Blue Remembered Earth by Alastair Reynolds which has a giant railgun built into Kilimanjaro… It is always something from a book.
“Zoomer Gallipoli” was amazing
Tim Curry in Israeli uniform: "I'm escaping to the he one place that hasn't been corrupted by antisemitism....SPACE"
Beautiful to hear Millennium Challenge posters get dap through clenched teeth. True grinders.
Nova owning two pairs of white jeans is genuinely the most shocking think I’ve learnt from this podcast
"The moon is no longer a distant aspiration; it's an emerging layer of global architecture" this is one of the most False statement I've heard in a very long time, it's quite remarkable. what next, the bottom of the Marianas Trench is a key hub of the knowledge economy?
Israelis 🤝 Techno fans I love Planetary Assault Systems
I would like to know the name of the background feline please, they had important things to say!

DON'T let your oafs become your overseers at the Situation Room table of success
*can* trump even withdraw at this point?? Wouldn't the iranian military and IRGC just keep bombing shipping? Like if they let him just run away without concessions there's the risk he'll try again
Can the US negotiate in good faith since they've gone back on every deal they've cut with Iran and assassinated their leader? Can any government in that entire area trust the US not to support Israel attacking them?
10:50 Actually, I looked it up recently. While under canon law, the Diocese of Orlando would encompass the Moon (due to explorers from there reaching the Moon), the current Bishop does not consider the Moon part of his diocese. E: The ISS would also be part of the Orlando Diocese for the same reason.
they should make this be the thing over which the american catholics do a schism. not least because then there'd be a wikipedia article called 'Catholic Moon Crisis' or something
Straights so dire they become queer
Welcome back Project Plowshare. So a dozen thermonukes, using the dimensions of the crater from the Sedan test (390m diameter), means he must be imagining cutting a path through the Musandam Peninsula, which is closer to Iran than Dubai or Qatar. Not sure how that protects you from their blockade, especially as hitting one ship would jam up the whole canal (I'm aware this is not a serious idea, I just like to game it out). A canal from Abu Dhabi to Filim, still very much in range, would take more than 1400 weapons each with a yield of more than 100 kilotons.
And yes, the Ben Gurion Canal idea was an alternative to the Suez between the Red Sea and Mediterranean, not an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. Just for fun, continuing the track of The Line as a canal bisecting Saudi Arabia, would require more than the ~3700 nukes the US has in active service
Okay, so a mass driver is not, in principle, a terrible idea as method or component of space launch. NASA and others have done some studies on them, and other non-rocket methods, since that's really the only way to bring launch costs significantly down. The wikipedia page for "rocket sled launch" and "non-rocket space launch" have more details, but most SERIOUS proposals have a sled, more like an actual maglev train, and carry a launch vehicle on top of that, essentially giving it a boost so you can use a much smaller and cheaper rocket. Trying to do the whole launch with just a mass driver requires a tunnel hundreds or even THOUSANDS of kilometers long, which is somehow kept evacuated or at least at very low pressure, and an exit hole at an altitude anywhere from 6km (a mountaintop) to 22km (held up by a hypothetical megastructure). This is a lot less feasible than the NASA MagLifter study, which looked at a regular expendable rocket being boosted by a maglev sled to 600mph on a 4 mile track, at 3km above sea level, increasing payload by 80% compared to a regular pad launch. That's what a *serious* version of this looks like
@Hugh Kearney (2)- The thing is, as you point out, there's no reason to do this. There's no real reason to go to space in any major way, we only ever did it because of cold war militaries competing with each other. Like the US literally considered the Brianna Wu tweet during the Cold war, as well as the moon as a missile base for second strike, before realizing that was dumb because submarines exist. Even those REALLY into scifi and space acknowledge that we haven't done much in space for a reason https://projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/macguffinite.php
oh no they're gonna shoot the moon turk
The trouble with Zionism is sooner or later you run out of other people’s missiles
The point about the US military huffing its own fumes about being all-powerful is so right. Like people online believe now that as long as it's the US doing it, you can just make any military action work, but that's not how warfare works even in the slightest. It's kinda like what Mattie says on NGNM about the US and Israel becoming the same country, but it's the US and Russia. "We're the superior white chuds so if we go somewhere, we'll win in 3 days." Washed.
The haven't won a war in almost 100 years at this point (Korea was a stalemate), it's always been propaganda.
Am I going mad or could anyone else hear the cat miawing? Or maybe child? (Neither are a problem I am pro cat/child I just want to know if anyone else heard)
Yeah. I thought it was very rude of the guest to talk over his cat, who clearly had some opinions they wanted to voice on the conflict. Bring the cat back on the show
Who wants their Hormuzzy Strait
So, what are the chances that AI data centers are consuming enough computer hardware that it interferes with US arms production

...hold up a moment... Anti-missle specialist helping build a railgun for launching things into orbit... That's Metal Gear Rex! Where are they building this thing, Shadow Moses?
Lisan al-Koji did it again.
Killing a guy and then stealing his idea is the most Israeli thing I have ever heard of.
"No shortage of ridiculous space launch ideas, but this is getting up there" —in all likelihood it's not getting up anywhere 😉
Another once in a generation event let's fucking goooooooo!!!!
Had to rewind to catch that opening again ohmigod
